Recently we started using a Backplate / Wing and we like it. But how do you carry things you need to carry that are not clipped on? Here I am speaking of safety devices like SMB, whistle, etc. and we may have some other things too. A large SMB stretches the capacity of the pockets.

Our drysuits may have pockets, but what about in a tropical environment, where we will rent our wetsuits? We tried those shorts with pockets, but they don't fit well.

Thanks,

Bill

Xs scuba has pockets for weights and other stuff.

I have tried the thigh pocket with rubberized band but am not totally happy with it yet. It was slipping around a bit due to fact I have integrated weights and needed to add a belt for it. So some more adjustments needed. Namely something to keep it from sliding along the belt.

I have pockets in my BCD but find them a bit of a pain to use. Easy to get stuff out of but hard to put stuff back in and zip up at depth. So trying out other options.

I tried the dive rite thigh pocket and it would not hold in place, kept rotating and coming loose.

My wife and I just go the XS pocket shorts. They are a much better solution, and they transfer from our 3 mil, to a 7 mil, to a drysuit, with only one investment. The pockets are not "tech large" but they are large enought to hold a 150' sidewinder-style reel plus a large smb in one pocket, and a snorkel, slate or wetnotes, even a spare mask in the other with a few finger spools thrown in.

I have my whistle zip-tied to my inflator hose for instant access as I don't want to dig through pockets under the stress of an emergency (the most likely time you will need it).

Welcome to the wonderful workd of bp/w! My wife tried one on at about dive number 25 and instantly refused to dive with anything else. We have been diving them the past 2.5 years now, about 150 dives.

Nothing is better that pockets sewn or glued on each of your exposure protection suits, but that adds up.

I rolled my smb around a piece of bungee with bolt snaps on each end then clip the snaps to the (conveniently placed) holes in the edge of my plate. SMB lies neatly along the plate, out of the way, but easy to get to when I need it. Spool clips to the lowest hole on the other side.

Whistle has a small boltsnap on it, clipped to left chest dring and held flat by a bunge loop.

Tables and mirror are clipped to left side of plate between wing and plate so they don't flop around.

Light clips to right chest dring, held down by bungee loop.

That's about all I take for vacation diving. I don't do photos, so no camera stuff to deal with.

Pockets, for me, are a place to put those things I no longer want (i.e., those things that will ultimately fall from the pocket and be lost).

Try the Halcyon weighted pocket. I prefer it over the Dive Rite pocket.
The Dive Right pocket is a little too small, and slips to the front of your thigh while diving.
The Halcyon one is belt mounted, and is bigger.
Get the new weighted one. It mounts differently than the old one.
The new pocket is the "weighted" version. It has an internal pocket that holds up to 5 lbs.

Agree with the shorts if you don't want to have pockets permanently attached. The ones from Irikonji Dive Gear LLC are more expensive, but nicely made.

A whistle can clip onto the inflater hose and I clip my DSMB to the butt D-ring. I clip a torch to the chest D-ring and strap it to the webbing with a snoopy loop (elastic loop) when it is not in use. For most recreational dives I do not need more than that.
