Has anyone looked at the Halcyon configurations from the 5th Dimension or Extreme Exposure? They sell for $595 for the Eclipse or less for the pioneer. I would prefer a FredT plate but the cost of the wing and so forth extra on top fo the plate makes these configurations rather appealing.

I ended up with the OxyCheq #45 Single configuration from COVCI. I found a lot of information on them and after reading all the pages it seems that of the people that I see posting information, and some of the people that are most critical on gear, were buying Oxycheq or even switching from Halcyon to Oxycheq. The #45 setup was $470 and seemed to be the best overall deal, though I still will eventually buy a FredT plate as I like his plate hole configuration best. I think I might even stick with Oxycheq when I buy a double's wing.

wow, I like the abyss ones that are rather colorful. maybe I might get one of those or just get get a fredT and take it to an artis friend of mine and have him paint it and clear coat it

If you go to Abyss's main hardware page, they state that the old company no longer exists and they won't be offering hardware again until 01/01/2005. Guess I will be going the different route if I want some color.

Wow, a harness AND backplate? That puts my $70 S&W Hammerhead plate to shame ;)

What?
You're telling me one company makes a bp for $70 and another makes the same thing and charges over $400??

There had better be a universally recognized WORLD of difference between the two for one to be THAT much more!

Forgive me, I'm new to researching this as well.
What about wings??
Is there a simple, safe, DIR wing out there for $50 from one company, and another's charging $500?

Not that I'm aware of. Here's what I know. Conventional Back Plates are not rocket science to build. You need either a laser, or Abrasive Water Jet to cut them and a good sized press brake to bend them. These are pretty common, and most shops that have one have the other, so it's one stop shopping. The fixed or non reoccurring expenses for conventional BPs is not high, no "dies" etc. This means only modest numbers need be ordered at any time.

All this helps to explain the wide number of BP's currently available and the competitve pricing. We build our own, because we can, and it allow us to include features not economically feasible for others, but in general the "barrier to entry" for simple BP's is low.

Wings are another matter. There are only a few manufacturers in the US. Building wings requires RF welding, sewing and either injection molding or the ability to purchase the necessary fittings, hoses, overpressure valves etc. in fairly large numbers. Rf welding requires dies. This means that the fixed or nonreoccuring costs for wings is pretty high and that the minimum order size can be considerable. The fact is most "wings" on the market today are private labeled goods all made by a handful of producers.

Keep in mind that "wings" are made in very small numbers compared to jacket BC's. The Big Jacket sellers can go off shore to lower costs, but the raw numbers for wings make this tough.

That IMHO is why wings are not as competitive as BPs.
