I guess since the traditional webbing is so cheap, when I get a rig, I'll try that at first. If it seems lacking in some way I can think about paying the cash for something more "elaborate".

Currently dive with a GUTS tall SS bp, Dive Rite TransPlate harness, and Dive Rite RecWings. Much more comfortable on the surface (shore diver here) that my old Halcyon DIR bp/harness, just as - if not more - comfortable underwater.

I use a DiveRite TransPlate harness, 6# SS DiveRite backplate, and Oxycheq 45# wing (recent "upgrade" from the DR RecWing). I do like the ease of getting into and out of the harness ... and with the cinch straps you can really make the harness snug to your body. It's the most comfortable rig I've ever used ... in and out of the water.

The only drawback to this setup is that the harness straps are showing significant wear after only a couple hundred dives, and they're a lot more expensive to replace than standard webbing.

Other than that, I haven't found any drawbacks ... it's a sweet rig.

I use a SS plate with continuous webbing; standard DIR d-rings. There is nothing to break with such a harness and there is no reason to add anything you don't need. The harness is simple, fits great and is extremely comfortable.
