Hi, i am thinking of doing my divemaster and i came from PADI open and advanced. Thinking of whether to switch to IANTD for more quality education. Any suggestions?

I 'm DM.

PADI. No question.

The PADI Divemaster is the backbone of the entire dive industry, recognised by dive shops, boats, and other instructors worldwide. PADI Divemaster is an exellent course, in itself. I have taken six Tech courses from IANTD and recommend them (and my instructors), but the Divemaster is a rating AND a job. You can always get reciprocity with a PADI DM rating with other agencies, NAUI, PDIC, IDEA, SSI, SDI and IANTD if you want to advance into any type of instructor courses.

Also, once you become a Divemaster (from any agency), you become a professional. You WILL NEED LIABILITY INSURANCE, do not let anyone tell you differently; and be SURE to get it BEFORE you take any Divemaster program.

Ok, I'm at the same crossroads.........if you don't intend to work as a DM, but just want to improve your knowledge and skills in diving, what would you suggest then. Do I have to drink from the Kool-Aid fountain (DIRF)????

Shaka, DM is a class that teaches you to deal with other people, Koolaid drinkers, beer drinkers, and water drinkers alike. It's mostly about people.

KcKsKh, PADI above and beyond IANTD. Have you ever been on an IANTD recreational boat? I doubt that you ever will. IANTD is there for 1 class Full Trimix, and even that class requires you to read about Karma and HPNS. It's hoakey, but what can you do. The most important part of becoming a DM is working with a quality instructor. I would interview and dive with no less than 3 instructors before you decide WHO to do your DM with. I got lucky and did DM under Barb Lander (Lusitannia, U-who, etc...). I learned a lot and spent a lot of time guiding in rough water. It was a great experience and I can not recommend it enough.

Cheers,
Jamie

Also, this is not a Tek Discussion, but it is in a Tek Board.
Cheers,

Why are you getting your DM? That's the important question you want to ask yourself. If you are not doing it to work with sudents then why bother? Continue your education in areas you are interested in and don't worry about getting the DM merit badge.

If you want to actually work as a DM, then don't worry about the agency. Pick the shop you want to work with and get your DM with them, whatever agency's koolaid they drink.

I did both.

The PADI DM did nothing to improve my diving, but I suppose I could take it anywhere in the world and be a boat monkey.

DIRf has no market value whatsoever, but it helped me make huge improvements to my diving.

They both cost about the same, though the DIRf results (better skills) happened in a whole lot less time than the DM class results (a card).
