Will a 7mm suit be warm enough around Boston coastal waters in April? And what are some nice easy local dives to start off with?

Late April will be pretty chilly but divable with a 7mm suit. I just bring the old thermos full of hot water to dump in the suit between dives. If you want an easy dive its not very busy along the Brant rock in Marshfield in April (if you are looking for an easy beach entry). The farther south you stay it may be a few degrees warmer.

1 dive maybe - 2 dives no

A 7mm with overvest would be ideal with good hood and gloves. Or at least a 3mm core warmer underneath, maybe. It will be chilly to say the least. May get away with 2 dives if you're hearty and do the hot water in the suit thing before your dives. April is too cold for me in a wetsuit.

Many folks here dive 7mm farmer john and jacket....which means 14mm around your torso :-)
Water will be cold in April.....optimistically high 40sF +/- depending on location, how the air temps are this spring, etc., etc. As to whether those are diveable...I guess it depends on what you're used to....but regardless it will likely be a short dive and as mentioned above, probably only 1.

Cape Ann north of Boston has the most diveable shore sites in the area. Check out the Cape Ann Divers web site (located in Gloucester for general dive site info).

I was diving at least once a week in a 7mm starting in mid-April last year, but it was a warm winter. You'll be chilly in a 7mm in April. It would be tough to do much more than a 35-40 minute dive. It gets much better later in the year, though. The water is fairly warm by June and stays that way at least through October.

+1 on the northshore for diving. There's a lot of easy, fun shore diving up here. Check out Loblolly cove and Old Garden Beach in Rockport (watch out for tickets!).
