Hello all
Am a newbie - any solid recommendations for Boston area instructors? Have located the Boston Harbor Diving Company (PADI) and the Boston Scuba academy (YMCA) so far. Also noticed someone else mentioned O'Donnel's dive shop.
Any other recommendations -

Many thanks
DG

Having worked with Jim (Boston Diving Co.) in the past, I have to highly recommend him. He is a great instructor, and will work with you until you are comfortable.
What class are you looking to take? Open Water, specialties, Nitrox???

I would recommend an instructor by the name of Jeremy Fonda who works out of Atlantic Divers in Saugas (Rt. 1) for anything in the PADI recreational catalog. I have completed 5 courses with him. He was very professional and has the diving experience to compliment the instruction.

divergal:
thanks for the info - am looking at a basic OW to start with

There are lot's of dive shops around Boston and metro Boston. Make sure you go with a referred instructor and not just a shop. There are good and bad instructors working at the same shops.

Rick Murchison:
Here are a few shops in Massachusetts (don't know how close to Boston these are, but suspect they're not far...)

Most of those are pretty far ... only Brookline and Somerville are within easy driving distance of Boston. Framingham's about a 40 minute drive from downtown if traffic isn't too terrible.

I didn't dive when I lived there, but I'll just bet there are some facilities on Cape Ann (Gloucester, Anisquam, Rockport) about 30 miles north of Boston. Betchya there's some nice diving up there as well.

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Ok, one more suggestion: pgdive. Paul and Genevieve Stewart have their own shop in Newton, MA (just outside Boston). They teach thru PADI, and are very good instructors (they started this shop to emphasize good training). Their website is www.pgdive.com, and the phone # is 617-969-3483. Paul and Genevieve have been active in the Boston area as scuba instructors for many years, and both of them are highly skilled instructors.

AS far as the list that Rich put up, Brookline and Somerville are the only two that are close to Boston. The others are in the outskirts, extreme western MA, and the Cape.

I was certified through Boston Scuba academy. The guy who runs it, Rick Teijero was great, very profesional. If you call him he will fully explain the class with no high pressure sale. Good luck
