I am very keen to make the next vacation to Bonaire for a week, but the girlfriend likes to be able to mix it up with other activities. (We are going into Belize in May and doing three days diving, three days ruins and outdoorsy activities). From what Ive read it is a pretty arid island and there are watersports a plenty, but other than that its pretty much just diving (which is what I am looking for, but she would like the option to do other things as well). I saw you can kayak in the mangrove, and there was a park with igunanas and flamingos. Any other activities that people would suggest?

There's plenty of stuff to do BETWEEN dives, but not much to do INSTEAD.

:D

There is wind surfing. I really enjoyed a trip to the park.

Wind surfing; mountain biking; touring the national park sites; photography: lots of interesting subjects from the salt pans in the south; the Rincon in the middle; the leeward coast for big surf and the national park in the north; dry land sailing; swimming; snorkeling; shopping; and sea kayak touring the mangroves, where you can see the upside down jellyfish. Finally, not having to be at the office working.

I would recommend spending part of a day at Washington Slagbai National Park. You can drive your truck through and get some great pictures, some nice panoramic views, and check out some of the indigenous wildlife. I had to track a Caracara (desert raptor- size of a small hawk) through the desert-shrub to finally get some good pictures. There's an old crumbling lighthouse at the north tip with frigate birds on the cliffs, some water holes with flamingos, tons of lizards and iguanas, lots of goats left over, if I'm correct, from Spanish rule. There's a big blow hole that sprays surf when you first drive up to the cliff's edge, makes for some nice pictures if you time it right.

There's a donkey sactuary, but I haven't been. You can also spend some time kayaking the mangroves, but I haven't done that either, been too busy diving.

I would definitely check out the park, though, it's at the north end and takes a few hours to drive thru.

Hope this helps.

Kevin

Ahhh, noticed you had all ready heard of the park. Well, at least you have some more info if you choose to go there.

Go to the donkey park on your non-dive day. Watching those donkeys react to a truck driving through is hilarious. I never thought I would want to take the trip through, but now I won't miss it.
