Does bonaire produce rum like the bahamas and jamica? If so which is the best brand to purchase and how much is the Luxury tax on it if you bring back more than the allowed two bottles?

No run is produced on Bonaire. Bonaire is a desert island so the sugar cane needed to make Rum is not grown. The closest thing is Amstel Beer that is brewed on Curaco.

I brought back several bottles of really good Cuban rum($5.00 US) that I got at the airport in Bonaire. No one in customs checked or asked- wish I got more-made some great mojitos!

thanks for the info i'll check it out there. When we were in the abhamas two years ago i bought a case of ricardo coconut rum and am on my last half a bottle. That was the best rum i've had yet.

There is a wharehouse on Bonaire that deals in wine and spirits. Don't recall what it's name is but they may have something you are interested in. The guys on Bonairetalk can get you the name or maybe Liz will show up with the name.

And the three bottles of rum I tried were not that impressive taste wise. Drown it in coke and it was tolerable.

Barbados is the place if you want rum. There are two breweries there. One is the Gay....and the other is Malibu. If you take the tour of the Malibu distillery....you wont believe your eyes...and thats all I am gonna say about that !!

On a trip to Bonaire stock up on liquor in the MBJ airport. On Bonaire, there is a brand of rum from Venezuela named Cacique that is really good but it sells quickly when they get it. Best place for liquor is at the new Warehouse Supermarket behind Lisa Gas. BTW Lisa Gas has a convenience store now.

In December I looked for Havana Club both at MBJ and at the Bonaire Duty Free and there was none available. I hope this changes but have heard that they don't produce as much anymore.

Herman,

The Antillean Wine Company. There website is http://www.antilleanwine.com They are excellent and will order whatever you want or need. I love them because I am allergic to sulfites (sp?) and they bother me. I can drink red wine on Bonaire as they don't have them!
