That is what we always do, and we have used many different resorts, and ops.

The op usually has staff nearby, just in case, but they are all very low key about it, if you seem to have your $#it together. Ready to assist, if you need, or ask, but low key about it.

Not exactly.

From the Bonaire National Marine Park Rules & Regulations:

"Orientation: All SCUBA divers must attend an orientation with their dive operator (the center from which air tanks are obtained) before diving in the BNMP. The orientation consists of a ‘dry’ part and a ‘wet’ part. The ‘dry’ part is a briefing on the Bonaire National Marine Park rules. The ‘wet’ part of the orientation is the check out dive, which is always supervised by the dive operation providing air. Repeat divers are required to attend a dive orientation and perform a check out dive every time they are back on island."

Some dive operators may be more relaxed than others regarding interpretation of "supervised", but "do it anyplace you like" is stretching things a bit.

I had never bothered to read the regulations. Thanks for the clarification. I think most of us considered the Orientation to be separate from the Check-out dive, when in fact the regulations characterize the Check-out dive as the "wet part" of the Orientation. A minor distinction, but interesting to know.

I am a pretty new diver (40 dives, spread over 4 years) and am heading to Bonaire in September. I have been reading as many of the posts pertaining to Bonaire as I can find. We are not traveling with our shop, rather this is a 4 person trip.

I know as new divers we have to do a check out dive, however I get conflicting explanations as to what the dive entails, or who do we see to do that dive. We are staying at a resort that does not have an on site dive center (Bellafonte Chateau de la Mer)

Some posts on here have made references to some of the resorts requiring payment or being less than friendly towards divers from other resorts. I can't recall the name of the book I read last year, but it basically said to go talk to each resort where you want to dive and that most places are very friendly and accommodating. I would love some opinions from divers who have "Been there and done that."

Once you get your pass, do any of the sites require a DM accompany you?

If anyone has any other hints, I welcome all input!!

Thanks in advance for any help!! :D

It's not a "check out dive", it's a 'check your equipment dive'.....ie no scuba police go with you on it & monitor your diving status & skills..:).......have fun...
