So I want to go somewhere with good shore diving but my dive buddy cares more about night life and drinking. Would Bonaire work? Are there any decent bars?

When we went to Bonaire last year, we hung out at some of the resort bars/restaurants - but I don't think/know if there is much that stays open real late. I too like to party a little and thought it was good enough to go back this summer as well!

Go to Curacao. Same excellent diving as Bonaire, actually with easier entries - and there's nightlife in town. Also about a dozen casinos. Curacao Nightlife- Curacao Entertainment- Curacao Clubs, Entertainment I actually feel that Playa Kalki in Westpunt is the best shore dive I've done on either island. It's about 45mins. from the excitement though so do it as a day trip.

What does your buddy do at bars back home? If he sits on a stool, drinks beer and chats with his buddy and makes pals up with a few other diving tourists, that might be fine. If he's cruising for women, wants dancing, wants loud rock music, etc..., I don't know - not my scene, but maybe other folks can comment.

Look at Bali, or as some here have mentioned, Curacao. Both have great shore diving and more night life options.

There is rural night-life in Bonaire that goes further into the night than what most tourist divers are exposed to in or near the main city. If you have a car and adventurous spirit, there are a few rural towns that have some pretty wild scenes.
Like DRRich2 says above- Partying? depends on what you are looking for. Of the ABC islands, I find Bonaire very much so superior for diving.
