I am in the process of trying to convince my non-diving wife that Bonaire would be a great place to go. She does enjoy the laying around in the sun stuff but there has to be something more or I'd never hear the end of it. And gee, guess what her favorite thing to do is;....................................................................................................................................................................................................SHOPPING. ugh

If I convince her to go, is there any? Is it the typical rip off the dumb americans? Will I have to re-mortgage the house?

Thanks for anything you can tell me.

Jim

PS She loves Grand Cayman.

Well, Bonaire is not a rip off. It's much cheaper all around land and sea then Grand Cayman.
But, the shopping is very boring.
It's known for it's 80 shore dives. Shopping is very low on the list of things to do there. I would give Cayman and Cozumel a 10 for shopping..and Bonaire a 2. The only places that are probably less shopping are Ambergris Caye in Belize and Roatan. They are both a 1 for shopping in my shopping book.
Sorry.

Non Diving Activities in Bonaire:

1) Sunning
2) Fun Restaurants for the adventurous
3) See the Flamingos by the salt ponds
4) See the slave huts as you drive by the Flamingos
5) Go to the Topless beach and pretend you're windsurfing
6) Go to the bar just past it with the huge pile of conch shells
7) Go to Slagbai Park and find the ancient handprints
8) Meet the "Bird Lady"
9) She could watch the car for burglars while you dive
10) Go through customs and get the cool stamp

If shopping in Bonaire is a 1, and Cayman is a 10, I would give Roatan a 2, Belize City 2.

If you like her, and if she likes Cayman, go to Cayman. Better yet, send her to Cayman, you come to Bonaire- we'll have a blast... in the top 3 islands for diving in the Caribbean in my book.

Cayman would be a better choice if shopping is important. Or Curacao, similar to Bonaire diving but more shopping and a little more to do.

I just e-mailed her your ten reasons! Hope it convinces her.

Remember though, she will probably want YOU to go with her on some of these adventures. There is also biking, and cave snorkeling.

As a rule of thumb, I wouldn't go to Bonaire with a non-diver. Not much fun for them, and they tend to bring you down. This is numero uno why I am not married, and dont go out with any non-divers. I just cant hack it.

You can delete number 10 as of 2003 they use a boaring square stamp, the neat flamingo stamp is no more.

10) Watch them chase the goats off of the runway before KLM noses the 747 in on final.

Bummer- that was the coolest stamp I ever got in 5 passports
