If you are carrying camera equipment, you might consider doing Karpata by boat, especially if it's a bit windy. Karpata is different from the other western shore dives and sometimes entry can be tricky up that way.

That's the truth. A group of us went there together. We all came out with bruises from being slammed into the rocks on both entry and exit.

Hi Bonaire Divers,
The name is Bonaire East Coast Diving and yes we organize trips to the "wildside". The circumstances differ from season to season but the term wildside mainly refers to the boatrides in the windy season. Luckily most boatrides are pretty short, max 10 minutes. Unless there are special requests. For for example spelonk or black rock. At the moment the circumstances are very calm , no waves nice current and we hope this will stay a few more months.

Welcome to the board. Nice to have ya :D. My next visit to the island will hopefully include a trip with you.

BECD, our family of four will be there in just under 5 looong weeks. Interested in perhaps taking a dive or two with you. We are there the 10th through the 17th though diving ends by noon on the 16th. Would you have any openings that week? We are thinking that the east side should be reasonably calm then.

Thanks,

Bruce

BECD, are you the guys that took over from Wild Larry? Do you use his procedures to get people on and off? Did any of his people stay on? What happened to Larry and Jan anyway?

Hi Janrn,
We did buy the boat he used to use. Yes we use allmost the same procedures coming in and out the boat (deflate the sides). If you look on our website you might recognize me under staff. (bonaireeastcoastdiving.com)

Walk out on the slab, make a controlled seated entry off the side. Swim back to the same side of the slab for an easy exit. I've seen people have trouble at Karpata, but it's pretty easy if you think it through before you get in the water.

Well Bob, I've always found that it's normally better NOT to walk out onto the concrete pier, especially if waves are breaking over it.

Karpata is a fantastic dive. Have always found it best to enter at the right side (facing the sea) at the base of the pier. Wait for a wave, have BC fully inflated & ride the wave out over the coral reef to the deeper water. Exit using the same technique.

I dive with my wife who has bad ankles, so at this site, I exit first & leave her in the deeper water. I ditch my equipment & then walk out onto the pier. She then takes off her tank, inflates BC & snorkels back in. I then grab her BC & haul it in. More work, but no injuries which is most important.
