mmm beef with a leathery texture!!! lol I had Casablanca bookmarked but I'm glad we didn't go there.

I took pictures of the food we had at Mi Fogon Latino and Plazita Limena. We ate there on our last day and both thought "finally, decent food on this island!"

my lunch at El Fogon Latino:
red snapper in garlic butter sauce with fried plantains and rice

I started with their soup of the day which is kind of like a sancocho.
It had an oxtail with chunks of plantains and potato. So good and oily!

His entree was the special of the day - some kind of breaded fish fillet that tasted like tuna with fried cassava

At the Peruvian place, we shared a pumpkin stew.
Can't really tell what's under the pureed pumpkin but it's half a corn cob and cassava.

We also shared a fish ceviche that was served with a boiled potato and corn.
yummy!

My entree was so huge.
Their Peruvian paella had chunks of chicken, shrimp, mussels, and scallops in each bite.
THEN it's topped with a grilled fish fillet. I was so overwhelmed.

Max had fish fillet in a creamy white wine sauce topped with shrimps.

Hello Fuggler,
My wife uses a Canon G9(she actually has 2 of them) with an Ikelite housing and a single strobe. she likes it and does quite well with it.If you want, you can email me and I will forward on to her and she will be happy to talk with you about the Canon G9.

Huh?
Jersey's the person who's interested in the Gsomething. ;)

No offense intended fuggler and fortunately I can't think of too many bad meals in Bonaire or maybe I'm just so darn hungry from all the diving! We usually do Casablanca for the mixed grill and noticed last trip it seemed a little overdone - like leather. But at $40 or so and enough leftovers to make 3-4 meals, we were OK with it, espec after a bunch of Sapphire and Tonics to wash it down. Mona Lisa, Wills Tropical Grill and Sense were our top 3 dining events during last trip, got to have a KFC run (though not as enjoyable as the old waterfront locale) and interspersed with my grocery and left-over 'must-a-go' meals (that's when you go through the fridge and say this must a go, that must a go...)

Thanks Maven! I can take the class and send the Curmudgeon out to dive more advanced/technical stuff as I feel badly when he's stuck with me and I want to spend half an hour on one coral head. Been shooting with a Sony digi that I thought was adequate and thought my skills were bad. Took a 1/2 day w/ John @ Buddy in March and while my dive skills got an A, subject matter/composition a strong B, we validated my camera an F-. Just not enough a$$ to do anything well - not macro, not mid-range not wide angle. But that's OK, it was bought as a starter and I've taken it as far as it will go. Time to move along! Considering a Canon G9, leaning toward Ike for housing, haven't researched any add lenses or strobes. We have an EOS Rebel T series, don't know if there is a housing or if I want to risk the family camera...

Trust me.... Just get the housing for the Rebel. I have had a rebel since getting interested in underwater photog. I had the same thought process (I don't wanna take the chance), so I went and bought a G9 and housing (No regrets), but I could have put that money towards the ikelite housing for the Rebel and more ports / lenses. The end result was that I now use my rebel xti with ikelite housing for stills and the G9 goes along for shooting video.... Lesson learned on my end.

The image quality of the Rebel or better series just cant be reproduced with a smaller sensor like the G series. The ikelite housings are rock solid, and as long as you aren't careless, it would be hard to flood one. I also pay for the DAN equipment insurance. Just makes it that much easier! =)

Enjoy.

I second Paul's advice on the camera. I was in the same place as you a year ago-- to go with the G9 or jump in with both feet and get the housing for my D80. I posed this question on the boards, and thanks to the many helpful folks who responded, I opted to house the SLR. I found the housing, strobe, etc. that seemed so overwhelming going from a little P&S to my new rig, is just as easy to work with once you put it together a few times, it just has a few more o-rings :).

I am going to be able to grow into the camera and already the pics I am taking look 10X better than what I could achieve before. The only down side I found is packing, the SLR set-ups are not exactly tiny.

Fuggler - now I'm just hungry! Great food pics and yet another reason to go back - El Fogon food. Thanks gang - I'm trying to be somewhat cost conscious but now leaning SLR route. $$Ka-ching$$ some more...
