I just don't log dives
There is a set of new mooring buoys in Boca. They run along the 30' reef from Palmetto Park Road up to Spanish River Blvd. These are some great hogfish and lobster spots. You can see just about every thing that swims at these spots. A lot of really nice shallow reef.

BTW, it gets better the further north you go.

Yeah, ixs-nay on the uoys-bay

You can park on the street on Spanish River, but that would be quite a hike with a kayak and scuba gear. All the parks in Boca Require a Parking Permit or pay the the daily fee. Annual permits are $55.00 and require proof of residency, daily fees range from $16-18.

All of the best reefs are right off the public beach 3/4 mile from the shore.

I don't hunt in the water.....I just explore.
How far off the beach are these new mooring balls?

Also wondering how far the mooring balls are, in comparison to the pompano dropoff or those off commercial blvd. How does the reef in this area compare ?

If I were sightseeing, with all things considered, the Pompano Drop Off is the preferred dive sight. It is a continuous reef with higher ledges and drop offs, plus it has the wreck of the Copenhagen. The advantage to Boca is that is is a series of very scenic patch reefs, much closer to the Boca Inlet than Pompano and can provide excellent hunting opportunities. Just like Pompano, it is a great spot for new divers to gain experience.

I'd say 3/4 of a mile, in an area with a lot of boat traffic. Even with a flag, I wouldn't suggest swimming out from shore.

Thanks to the OP for the info in here. Just some info for anyone reading this thread in the future ... a buddy and I tried to dive this site as a beach dive yesterday. Pretty much all of the publicly accessible beach from Palmetto to spanish river has lifeguard towers, and diving/spearfishing is not allowed when they are on duty (the guards basically told us just to wait til they get off at 5pm or get in the water before they arrive in the morning). Another less ideal option is to park at spanish river and walk a bit north to the unprotected area, entering there. I have two friends who have done the site , as a beach dive, at night and they said it was nice.
