1984 too old....BS. If the power head (rings and pistons mainly) and lower unit are ok and it is in reasonably good overall shape,then what you really need is a set of tools and a good manual. Unless you have to go into the powerhead or lower unit, they are fairly easy to work on and for the most part don't require any special tools. I have a 1961 10hp Johnson and a 68 6hp Evinrude that are still going stong. The biggest problem is that most shops don't want to work on the older units, there is more money in the newer ones and a lot more money in selling you a new engine.
