We stayed far enough away, but they kept coming toward us. Merry had the video camera zoomed in most of the time. They have been out there for about a week feeding on krill. Hopefully they will stay around awhile.

I get to see them nearly daily from the air, it is amazing how big they look even from 3500'. Unfortunately, it seems they face a constant barrage of boats that follow them and just happen to stop in their path. I'd be curious what percentage of the population is inshore vs. near the outer channel islands that I don't get to see.

Thnx for sharing

That's awesome. That was just up in Redondo Beach? I haven't been there in forever but I live like 10-20 minutes away :p (In San Pedro, which is pretty close to Torrance; I have to drive there to get to Best Buy :p).

Isn't that the law down here or is it the official suggestion? I thought it was you can float up and take photos as long as you stop within a certain number of feet or yards away, but if they come up to you it's fine. Just curious.

You cannot approach within 100 yards or in front of their path. There is no law about whales coming to you. There have been sightings of dozens of Blue whales off Pt. Fermin all week as well.

We came back from a long Labor Day weekend on Monday on a friend's sailboat. We saw the whales all the way from Palos Verdes to El Segundo on our way back to Marina del Rey. We've never seen so many whales at one time in Santa Monica bay.

A lifeguard told me blue whales were also spotted on Labor Day at the Point Dume bell buoy
