616fun and I took the day off work and went to Blue Springs yesterday for a couple of fun dives as we both continue to test some new equipment and various equipment configurations.

Upon arriving at around 9:30 am it was still a bit nippy and the sun wasn't yet very high in the sky. We decided to build a small fire to keep warm before/between dives. That proved to be a really good idea as the wind kicked up a bit making it colder than it seemed given the bright sunshine.

We got in a couple of dives. The visibility seemed to be more consistent than it was on my last trip to Blue Springs. We didn't encounter any areas of zero viz like I did when I last dove Blue Springs back on Aug. 30. Unfortunately, it was consistently poor viz ... 5-7' with maybe a max of 10' in spots. Even though the sky was cloudless and the sun was nice and bright, it seemed more like a night dive below around 35'.

The water temps are quite consistent also. No thermocline that we could find with temps in the 46-47 F range.

We were diving from the north beach. The main dock on that side has now been removed from on top of the shelter and is laying along side the parking lot. They have lashed together a makeshift dock attached to the old, shorter dock that had been to the right of the main, longer dock. You really want to enter there by following the dock around and out over the wall. We first entered in the shallows to the left of that which was a mistake. It's very silty and mucky and there is still alot of grass there, which is now dying, to get tangled in. Stay over close to the makeshift dock.

All in all a decent day. Two descents ... two ascents. I was able to test out 616fun's DSS Torus 49# doubles wing and the new inflator that I've put on my Oxycheq 50# doubles wing. 616fun tested his new DSS singles BP/W with his Faber HP100. Not the best day of diving, but a heck of alot better than being at work!

Nice!! So I take it that it has recoverd from its flood from earlier this year..

Let's say it's recovering. The water quality is fine. The tests have been done to show that. Plus, anecdotally, I know numerous people including myself who have done multiple dives there without any side effects.

The visibility is still recovering. It may never fully recover the type of viz it had prior to the flood. There is a layer of silt on absolutely everything that ranges from half an inch to more than an inch. It covers every rock, platform and underwater attraction (cars, boats, etc.). That silt will never go away. It will therefore always be more prone to being stirred up.

Topside the owner has IMO done quite a bit. Roads and parking lots have been repaired. More work still needs to be done on the northside dock, but I fully expect he'll have it repaired by next season.

Thanks for the report Jim!

A day of diving is better than a day of work, even if it is with Jim :D

But somebody needs to dive with him and I refuse to do it every time. I can only take so much. :D
