Hi -- I'm fairly new to diving (just 1 year now), have my Advanced Certification, and only 15-dives under my belt. The one thing I've noticed the last few times diving is that after 2 or more dives in the same day, I have blood in my spit. Basically, once I get out of the water after a dive, I spit to clear all the junk in my throat. After a single dive -- no problem. On the second and subsequent dives, I noticed the spit was partly red with blood. I have no noticeable blood coming from my nose. This has happened on 3 occasions now. It clears up right away -- after 3 or 4 spits to clear my throat, I don't notice anymore blood. Is this something to be concerned about? Should I see an ENT? Thanks...

Yes, it would be a good idea to see a specialist about it and find out what is going on exactly...

It could be drainage from either a middle ear squeeze middle ear or more likely a sinus squeeze but best to make sure there is nothing else going on.

Most times mine is caused by trying to equalize to hard.
I break small blood vessels in my nasal passage and in ends up in my throat. I solve it by reminding myself to equalize more often when I dive.

If I don't dive for a few weeks I'll have the same thing happen. It isn't necessarily anything of importance but see your doc.

Wow! This is my first post and I can't believe the quick and great responses!!! You can bet I'll be back to ScubaBoard on a regular basis from now on... I made an appointment with my doc and I'll take it from there. Thanks for all the great advice!

oh... good thinking...

maybe a visit to a dentist might be in order too?

I don't have any irritations from the mouthpiece -- I have a new Aqualung Titan LX and it has a very comfortable mouthpiece. Also, I see a dentist regularly and have no gum or other mouth problems.

You never know what the problem is . I would highly recommend checking it out with a doctor. Better be safe than sorry.

Good luck !
