To those in the medical field, thank you. But update your websites that state no diving, period; and please stop scaring folks from diving. There have been no recorded diving incidents from bleomycin and diving.

Are you referring to any website(s) in particular, or to any specific medical personnel active on this forum?

Cheers,

DocVikingo

I am now two months out of chemotherapy for Hodgkin's Lymphoma and received three cycles of Bleomycin (132 units). I came across this thread and was wondering how the divers that posted on here made out with their return diving? I personally, am a rebreather diver and hope to return to shallow, low pp02 dives by next season (8 months out of chemo)

Sorry, very long time since I checked this forum. I meant the cancer treatment centers/etc. that when you look on their FAQ's, SCUBA diving is not allowed period.

Update: I have been on 6 dive trips on Aggressor since remission from Hodgkins, Stage IV (ABVD 6 cycle treatment) since 2011. Getting their 'Iron Man' certification for each dive made; ~25 dives in a 5 1/2 day time period WITH Nitrox ~32% and sometimes going to 115 ft. Still here and having fun. It still amazes me how this whole subject around bleo and diving is way blown out of proportion. There has been no certified deaths from diving post bleo. All theory. Certainly need to get PFT and CT scans but if clear, no reason not to go out and live your life.

Am looking at starting back up my technical diving as well.

Be well.

well after my last treatment my doctor decided to make me aware that i may never dive again not just i don't need to dive for a year or so.. i have contacted allot of doctors who specialize in diving/meds and DAN. but havent been to sucesful with getting much info other than i didn't realize and wasn't told that it was very serious affects.

Has anyone dove after bleo treatment ?
If you have what was the affects?

I received 4 doses over almost 5 months. I will not be getting anymore. I have had them do pulmonary test. They did one before my treatment ever started and after i told them that I was told to get another they finally done it . I kinda believe they wanted me to get the treatments before i realized it would affect my diving and could back out they were successful i guess.

From what i can tell my lung test have had no c'ange before or after the treatments numbers all vary 1-2% up or down. was told this was normal..

I've been diving for the past 5 years and its became my life even threw treatments and all this there hasn't been more than 2 or 3 days pass that I've not be at the local quarry. I haven't dove since February done some snorkeling a couple times.
Been coming close to going crazy being out of the water.

and the doctors just now are deciding that it might have been important to tell me this before hand??

What I've got out of most of the doctors is if i dive I'm basically volunteering myself as a test hamster. Might end up here before long.

thanks for any info i can get. Adam

I had chemotherapy treatment for Testicular Cancer which included 4 doses of bleomycin, in February 2012. Subsequnet to the treatment i was advised by a dive doctor to cease diving, after further discussion he changed his mind and said wait 12 months. I resumed diving in September 2012 with no ill effects whatsoever and have dived on 55 occaisions since at recreational depths of 42m. i am writing a paper in conjunction with my oncologist so that the diving fraternity are better informed. I would be very interested to hear from divers who have had bleomycin treatment for any type of cancer as to how it affected their diving career.

regards

Jack

How's the thing now with diving after getting Bleomycin? I also received Bleomycin 5 years ago. After a few years of asking him about starting Scuba diving, he cleared me to start diving now. I also read all papers relating to Bleomycin and Scuba diving, and concluded that it is probably safe if you are doing fine without any side effects after getting Bleomycin. I just wanted to know how things work with other people now.
