I have been doing a lot of black water diving lately and I am trying to find a way to continue navigating with 0 vis.

I was considering putting a small compass on my mask lens but in trying it in the garage my eye was unable to focus in on the letters because it was so close.

Anyone have any recommendations or handy gadgets?

Kevin

Why are you diving in 0 vis? Where are you trying to navigate to?

I use a line for low vis navigation, or when there's potential for low vis.

In true zero vis I use a line, or a safety line and tender.

Get a piece of pyrex or glass and make a water filled tube/plate/block.If you put that against your mask and shine the light at the side(or integral LED in the block) you can read gauges etc.See the CDG manual for info.

Your YMMV with navigating though..tender etc as Rick suggested would be best.

Thanks for the reply. I will take a look at the CDG manual for additional info.

As far as why I am diving in 0 vis...because that's where the money is!

Golf balls? :)

During underwater archaeological surveys just off the Texas coast where the vis is "0," we would tie off to the anchor line and then swim circle searches. We would start with a large circle and then cut that down with each turn.

If we were trying to run a straight line, we set a stake at one end of the search area and then draw back using a line to the start of the area. This would allow us to pull ourselves to the other end in a straight line (fairly staight). We could then move over one way or another a certain amount of space to continue the search...

Not sure if that pertains to what you are asking however
