I am heading to Bikini Atoll in 10 days with eight other divers
:D. For those that have been, what tips do you have and what do I need not to miss along the way.

Sorry, no tips, but Bikini is on my list of things to do. After your trip, please crack your fingers, break out your lexicon, and give us a nice full trip report. I'd love to hear all about it (I'm sure others would too).
Have a great trip.

excellent!!!!!!!!!!

my tip is be flexible with your travel arrangments... i know one guy that due to plane troubles was forced to phone his boss and say "sorry, im stuck here for ANOTHER week"

it was tough but he dealt with it :D

ENJOY!!! and remember, we need trip report and pics :multi:

Your profile says tech diver with 200 to 499 dives. Expect to be treated like a newbie. Expect to go on guided dives in large groups with absolutely no variance permitted.

Expect to be overawed by the wrecks, the history, the clear warm, water and the critters. Expect to be checked out by sharks regularly. Expect to be incredibly frustrated about the way you are treated as a tech diver. Expect mediocre food with indifferent service. Expect awesome sunsets and total isolation. Expect to be grateful that the Air Marshal Islands plane actually landed in one piece. Expect some political overtones to everything. Bikini Atoll Divers is a branch of the Bikini Atoll government and they have a message they want to send.

Expect to pack all your regs, canister lights etc in your carry on so you have 1 40lb checked bag and 1 100 lb carry on bag for the flight to Bikini.

Take a few recent releases DVDs/newspapers/magazines. The staff will be grateful for any news of the outside world.

Check out the Bar in Robert Riemers hotel in Majuro. We did a taxi tour of Majuro. It was interesting.

Take plenty of reading material and sunscreen. You might also want some powered gatorade. IIRC they charge 3$US for gatorade and 1$ a soft drink.

Enjoy.

Your profile indicates that you're a technical diver; this would mean that you have invested time and money into aquiring superior skills. It would be reasonable to expect to get something for it, especially at a location that insists that you have such certs.

Here is a thread that you really need to read all the way through. You will need to register to view the thread, but it's free.

There are lots of not-so-subtle nuances as you will see, including obvious posts by the DM from bikini (posting as someone else) as well as interesting material regarding the certification levels claimed.

This is not to say you'll have a bad time; just, make sure you go there with realistic expectations, so you will have a good time.

<shrugs> We had been in the process of putting together a group to go there ourselves. That is on indefinite hold until the management changes.

Have fun!

All the best, James
