I'm looking to gear up for a number of classes this summer aimed at comfortable caving...followed by the natural progression of certifications. However, as a poor grad student, I want to avoid 1) overpaying for equipment, and 2) buying gear twice because I made a poor choice for the future. I'm leaning heavily toward my LDS recommended regulator setup, but his choice of a back inflating BC doubles my price. I'd like some advice on wheter this is a reasonable alternative. Beuchat Master Lift Tek BCD
Is anyone using it?

Thanks for the help.

Lot's of experienced tech divers will probably reply to this thread with solid advice, but if money's a big issue, it would make sense to me to find an inexpensive SS plate, make your own single piece harness (probable total cost so far about $100 max) and then lurk on ebay for an appropriate wing.

BTW, are you a grad student at UT? I got my doctorate there a few years ago. Nice town!!

Money's not a big issue, just an issue; I'd probably spend the extra $175 to avoid guessing at quality piecework for now. Thanks for the broadening of my possibilities, though.

I just finished my second semester pursuing a doctorate in geology--hence the karst interest. What do you teach?

If your wanting to cave dive go the route Back Plate and wing its the way to go, avoid "tech BC's"

A good backplate and harness will go a long way, flexible, and cheaper than "tech BC's", get yourself setup with the one piece webbing harness Ebay a SS back plate, pick your self up a travel wing or simliar and you have a singles setup, to go to a cave rig just change the wing and strap on the appropriate tanks/regs/etc
