I'm working my way through my home study before my OW class in two weeks. So far, things seem okay. Does anyone have a better mnemonic device for the 5 step safety check (BWRAF?) The one PADI provides makes no sense, which makes it tough to remember. I look at it and see Black,White, Royal Air Force- but I don't know if that will hold for weeks...

So does anyone have a good saying to remember this? (It's also a bit tough to remember R is for releases and not regulator, which is covered by air...)

Big Women Really Are Fun
Blonde Women Really Are Fun
Brunette Women Really Are Fun
Bruce Willis Rules All Films
Bruce Willis Ruins All Films

Take your pick. All the ones I know involve either fun women or Bruce Willis.

Bangkok Women Really Are Fellas
British Women Really Are Fat
Burger With Relish and Fries

I do know another one but it's NSFW

I don't know what your feeling on mnemonics are, but I have a few friends who HATE them and always prefer to just learn the things as a check list (ie just remember Buoyancy, Weights, Releases, etc). Personally, I've just heard BWRAF so many times the letter order is just stuck in my head (and sounds annoyingly close to barf).

I do agree with you that the R is annoying, especially since in the five point decent, SORTED's R is for regulator. I've had many people express confusion with those two...

Anyways, best of luck and enjoy your upcoming dives!

Beer With Ribs And Fries
Big White Rabbits Are Fluffy

Thanks all! These are great!

My husband came up with "big wallabies raise Australia financially".

But any of these are easier to remember than PADIs non sensical one.

Mmm.....beer.......

"Bruce Willis ruins all films" is what we tell our students. "Belgian women really are fat" is another.

I don't like the mnemonic at all, and it doesn't even address all the things you need to check, if you are going to do it thoroughly, unless you read the whole list of things included in each letter. I much prefer a head-to-toe equipment check, starting with "I have my hood" (or mask, if you are in warm water) and working its way down the body so that every piece of gear and every connection is confirmed as being as it ought to be.

It's better than GUE EDGE which has to be the worst mnemonic out there - note I'm speaking of the mnemonic not what it addresses.
