I am looking at getting back into diving and am trying to decide on a good Tec BC. I originally owned some of the jacket style BC's, then I got a Halcyon BC. Loved it! It was so much better than the jacket for everything, what it did for my buoyancy control was nothing short of a miracle. Anyways, I had to get rid of everything a few years ago and am looking at getting back into the sport now. Every year there are great improvements and things have certainly changed since 2011. I am wondering what would be the best Tec style BC now? I do not want to go back to jacket style. Is Halcyon still good? or did another brand/model have substantial developments that surpassed theirs? Diving style will mostly be tropical, single tank. But from time to time may be twins, cave or wrecks once I have a few refresher dives.

Halcyon still good. Look around for used ones. They come up here as well as on the big Scuba Swap and Shop group on Facebook.

I still have my Halcyon Pioneer and Explorer wings from 2000. Although they have led a tough lives, they are still going strong, so I can definitely recommend Halcyon for quality and longevity. I have tried other brands of wings, but Halcyon is my favorite by far. I also like and own Dive Rite back plates.

There haven't been a lot of changes with BP/Ws since you sold your gear, as opposed to lighting technology or computers. I've been very happy with Halcyon. Deep Sea Supply has large following here too. Be sure to get one of their replacement OPVs for your new wing if you don't buy one of theirs.

If you listen to the manufacturers marketing hype there have been vast improvements in dive gear over the last few years. A couple of manufacturers have came out with real game changers in BC technology over the past few years. I'm not sure what game has been changed but I have not seen it. In reality nothing has really changed in the past seven years. Well one thing has changed, Atomic has figured out how to sell a poodle jacket for $1400.

I really like Dive Rite wings, just my preference though. Their customer service is amazing too.

I personally dive the REC EXP in dual bladder. Not sure if you are going to take any PADI Tec courses, but you will need redundant buoyancy device. If you aren't diving drysuit then this is a great option. I teach in it, both singles and doubles Tec and Rec. It's a great wing.

I use a rec dual bladder in xt for backmount TEC and trips. That allows me to do backmount singles or doubles and sidemount on trips. But, locally I use a rec single bladder in exp for recreational instruction to save wear and tear on the other.

Poodle jacket for $1400?? Wow!
Which one is it?

Add: never mind, found it.
