I am looking for something cheap and easy to use for communication underwater.
Thanks.

wetnote's?

Yep. Wetnotes.

Ok that was the short version.:D

What are you gonna do?
I use a A4 slate for teaching lots of space
A6 slate for OW training just to give hints
Wristslate during the dive for note to self
Wetnote's for quick communication during the dive.

cheers.

I believe you should learn hand signals for this.

If you are an instructor, then you would have been taught to use 4" x 6" slates to list the skills of the dive to be covered.

If you are mapping a reef, then you would hvae been taught to use an 8"x10" slate.

"Wetnotes" is a submersible note pad that is also popular with many beginning tech divers.

None of these is particularly cheap, however.

Popular hand signals are:

Thumb down for "going down"

Thumb up for "going up"

Hands cupped for "dive boat"

Point to gauge for "what is your SPG pressure"

Point to gauge & thumb signal back behind you for "time to turn around"

Making a biting claw with your hand for "moray eel"

Putting your flat hand to your forehead for "shark"

The famous American OK signal (which has other profane meanings in parts of Europe)

The famous OOA signal (which means kill in the military)

Etc.

My favorite dive sign is pointing your middle finger at what ever piece of gear has malfunctioned which roughly translated means "this piece of gear is...ummm...non functional."

I have made wrist slates out of 4" PVC pipe. Just cut to the appropriate size and shape and install a bungee in holes drilled on each end to hold it in place.

You can also get fancy and cut additional pages for it. Just cut the bungee side of each page with a 1-2" flat spot tapering about 1/8" to 3/16" toward each end - that will cause the page to go over center and stay open when you fold it open.

You can get really fancy and leave an extension on the base to mount acompass or bottom timer - just on cut two slots for the strap to secure that end of the slate.

Now that I have went the He computer route and have limited wrist/arm space due to a wrist computer, backup bottom timer and compass, I just put the deco and contingency plans on a pocket slate or on wet notes.

Cheap slate?cut a piece of pvc pipe in half.Sand the edges and cut it 4 inches long.Drill a hole in in three corners and two holes in the 4th corner.Run a piece of bungee with knots to hold it,to fit your wrist.Run another bungee in the 3 holes on the other side. The extra hole is for a loop to hold a lottery pencil.
