Hey gang, this is my first time joining you all so a Hello is in order. I spent all last summer diving for bugs in Cape Ann with tremendous success. My renewed lobster permit just arrived, the water hit 40 deg F, I must dive soon. My first dive of the season will be in two weeks once my new E8's get to me from back order. I'm looking for advice on early season Lobstah hunting in Gloucestah. Do I need to dive Cathedral Rocks to get deeep because they haven't come in close yet? How about Folly in 50ft or so or can I dive anywhere on Cape Ann. Please help, I'd rather not get skunked on my first dive of the season. Thanks Sid

I never get decent sized bugs this early, I'll be interested to hear where (and at what depth) people are getting keepers this time of year.

The reason people have great bug spots is because they don't post on scuba boards where they are :) So far I have only caught 3 legal bugs this year. I think it's still too cold for them to be around in any numbers.

I was curious as to general areas - CA, SS, etc. not people revealing their secret spots :)

I tend to start taking bugs in decent numbers when the water hits 50, is this what you guys find?

Why is that? Do they stay in deeper water or do they migrate? Or does anyone know? Inquiring minds want to know.

I really don't know, I've heard that some migrate out deep and that some go way into their holes. The lobsterman seem to get them year-round though?

All I know is that I don't have much luck untill I see a water temp of 50degs..

Temps must be close to 50F degrees by now in the shallows? Hopefully, I'll get into the water soon and see for myself if the lobstahs are there. Then, I'll be able to re-acquaint myself with all those 'they'll be ready by next spring' bugs.

50 degrees would be nice. Water temp in the shallows in Stonington, CT was a balmy 40 degrees last Friday. Not much to see but small crabs and one BIG Horseshoe crab. It looked like a boulder moving along the bottom.
