I am going alone to Roatan at the end of Oct. I am thinking about Coco View or Anthony's but not sure that i want to feel trapped at a resort for 7 days. I'm 45 and I have loads of dive experience (instructor for 6 years in Maui). First time to Roatan and was hoping for some suggestions on cool places to stay. I'm not a hard core party guy but i like the flexibility of being able to get away and explore if I want. Also, I would like to find a safe and quiet place to stay at night. I was kind of thinking West End or West Bay, but I am having reservations about it. Everything that i have read leads me to Coco View for Diving, Anthony's for overall and West End/West Bay area for more things to do. I'd like to spend about $1000-$1500 for the whole week. Any suggestions?

CoCoview is the place to dive in Roatan. You can do 5 dives a day with no problem. The food is just ok and the bar area is nice. But you are trapped there. You could get a cab and go to the west but that is going to bring your costs up (about $30 each way).

West Bay is very nice. Probably the best beach on the island. Good diving but you're not going to get the amount of dives in that you would get at CoCoview. Its a 10 minute cab ride ($5) to West End and some night life. Bananarama (bananaramadive.com)is my choice as it has nice accommodations and a great dive op.

West End you can get very cheap accommodations a good choice of dive ops and many dining choices.

All in all Roatan is a great place to visit and you will not be disappointed.

West Bay is my favorite.

If your looking for a quiet place at night, check out Barefoot Cay. You can get three dives a day, the food is great and it is clean and safe. It's my personal favorite and I am there right now. This is my fourth trip here and we are staying for two weeks.

We went to Coco View in June. Honestly, it was the first time that I'd been on a vacation where I REALLY didn't want to leave.

Frau & I talked about taking some of the excursions to other places, but we decided that there was too much diving to do (4 boat dives & unlimited shore diving per day). The resort lays on a boat & schedules taxi to take people into town as they want.

We're not party animals either, but the bar at the club house was well stocked. Food was very good. Other divers friendly. Boats & staff excellent. Facilities up to date. Lots of different dive sites. We especially liked the mid-boat entry well (you come up in the middle of the boat).

The only way out of CoCoview is by boat. Once on the "mainland" its about a 15 minute cab ride to French Harbour

Check out Las Rocas Resort (Roatan - Las Rocas Resort & Dive Center, Bay Islands of Honduras) at West Bay. They have a restaurant and dive shop on site. You can do two or three dives per day. You can buy a whole package if you want (meals and diving) but I suggest you go a la carte. If you want to eat at the resort, you can certainly do that but there are other restaurants down the beach you might want to try. They include round trip airport transfers if you stay a minimum number of days. The rooms are basic, but clean. They have air conditioning. WiFi access is available for a small charge. I feel they are one of the best buys in West Bay.

We dove with these guys while in Roatan for the day. They really treat you well and great dive spots are right in front of their shop. We ate lunch there and it was really good as well. Didn't stay there though, so I can't comment on that, but they do get excellent reviews.

Looks like they are running a special right now as well.

I've heard good stuff about this one as well, but don't have any personal experience with them.
