This was the article that I had read. I couldn't remember which mag it was in. Anyway, I would be driving from Allentown, PA, and my buddy and I are just looking for new places to check out. Seemed that Mt. Storm got a good nod from Diver Training, but I wanted to hear from some of you guys that have dove it.

Thanks for the input! :D

Jack

It's from Dive Training Magazine.

Ref. Mt. Storm: The warm water (when the plant is running) is nice, but that's about the only good thing about it. There's a couple platforms, lotsa catfish, and nothing else (that I've seen anyway). Vis is poor most of the time, and it always seems to be windy and cold when we go. However, Blackwater Falls state park is just up the road and they have a great lodge to stay in.

The biggest problem w/Mt. Storm is getting there. It's a solid two+ hour drive for me, and I'm only 90 miles away. Up and down and around the hills of WV gets kinda harrowing in an S-10 full of dive gear :)

I'm assuming you've done Dutch Springs up near Allentown? That's probably the best quarry diving I've seen. Bainbridge seemed pretty nice, but I've only been there once.

One of the guys I dive with regularly goes up there. I thought he had take some of the pictures for the Dive Training article, but I could be mistake. Regardless, he's stopped going up their because the visibility has been -very- bad for nearly a year. But getting information form a known online jerk (aka me) is like taking the advice of your cousin's uncle's bestfriend's former roommate. :D

HOw bad has the viz been at summersville lake I'm planning a trip 14-19 sept to dive the lake and would really like to know?

I have been taking my Advanced Dive Certification at Summersville lake this past weekend and I can tell you the vis was anywhere from 20 ft to 6 depending on the time of day and the amount of boats on the water. I will be back again this weekend again for some deep dives and a night dive.

What do you think the best place to dive in West Virginia is???
Indian River Inlet, DE
Ocean City, MD
Virginia Beach, VA
Hatteras, NC
Morehead City, NC
Wilmington, NC

Neither Summersville nor Tygert lake have a power plant. Mt Storm does. The greatest thing about Mt Storm is that it is warm.......did I mention the water was warm...and don't forget, the water is warm.

Really pretty mountains and nice parks but I wouldn't go out of my way to dive Mt Storm unless you really want that alitude card (3200').

Are either of those places have a power plant at the lake? I read about one that isn't far from PA, but I can't remember the name of it. It's supposed to be really nice.

Thanks for the insight. I read the article, and it was certainly different from the dive site I went to. I downloaded the map, and it looked like a couple of dive platforms, several pine trees and a stream...LOL!! It's better than not diving at all, but not worth the trip down.

Yep, I dive DS about every weekend. Two Saturdays back, the vis was horrible. One place it was about 15 ft, and the second dive, I had a zero viz experience! Total brown out. I couldn't see the guy in front and me and he was only three ft away. One a good day it's 30 to 50 ft viz. I've never been to Bainbridge, but I don't have sealed regs, which are required. Willow Springs is nearby as well, but it has a huge algae bloom and viz is like 6ft.

Anytime you want to come up this way and dive one of these places, give me a holler. We'll treat you right! :D
