Well, they shouldn't be REAL long. Those would be freediving fins. Just an average length fin is best, non-split, and open-pocket, not the foot-pocket kind.

heyyyy, what do you have against freediving fins? ;) I use mine( 3 foot long-blades) from time to time just for variety, I will admit, though, that they certainly get in the way at times. Not good for confined areas either, but if you want something that WILL produce movement through the water, don't rule them out just yet. You could also buy you a pair and take up freediving.

Buy quality from a local shop you can trust. Make sure everything fits and enjoy diving. I have had a lot of gear and now own all Scuba Pro equipment from my split fins to my 650 reg they are hard to beat.........

mares reg, seaquest bc, dacor fins, mares x-vision mask, oceanic comp. and last but not least fruit of the loom underware :scubadive

LOVE IT, LIVE IT, DIVE IT!!!!!!!!!

Fruit of the Loom??? Are you crazy, every diver knows Jockey are the BEST!

Do your research on equipment. Try on lots, talk to several shops, talk to friends about which shops they like, and buy locally. The service and support from a good local shop are well worth a few dollars extra.

I got all my gear at my local LDS. These guys trained me, I dive with them now, they sold and service my equipment. I purchased Scubapro, except for my suit and fins.

If you're gonna dive often(at least once every two week), then start from the top gears, that way you won't waste money on gears that you will eventually give up( i.e. rental style gears).

Take everything your LDS sais with a grain of salt. They will try to sell you what the carry. This may or may not be what you want or need. I currently use nothing one of my LDS sold me except my mask - everything else got replaced.

What's wrong with full foot fins?

If you ever get stuck swimming for a long time full foot fins will cut up and blister your feet a lot quicker than booties + open heel fins.

I buy my gears based on the reviews at www.scubadiving.com. I will narrow down my choices down to a few and also provided that there is a dealer nearly who can service it later on. Then I will go shop around and see which one fits bets, of course taking budget into consideration.
The most important gear, in my humble opinion is the regulator set. Get the best one which you can afford, follow by the BC and Fins.

I end up buying: US Divers Costeau/Micra for the regulator set
Scubapro Jet fins
Technisub Sphera mask, low volume, easy to clear (before this, i was
using a old black rubber mask made by Tabata bought way back in
1983. Now, I have a total of 4 mask, 2 still new and never been
used)
S&W Bp and Oxycheq wing
Mares M1 computer

I managed to try out the Micra and Jetfins before buying them.

Cheers

michael
