I've persuaded my parents to stay down south for Christmas (instead of returning to Canada), so my husband and I will be flying from Paris (our new home - hence my nickname) to Palm Desert to meet them for Christmas. Then we've got a few days (Dec 26-29) in Southern California (with a rental car) before flying to Vancouver on the 30th to meet my sister for New Years, and then home to France.

We'd like to fit a couple of dives into the trip (one dive day max.), if possible, probably on the 26th or 27th (if we detour to San Diego) or the 27th or 28th (if we go straight to LA from Palm Desert). Mr. frogoutofwater is an ex-LA resident, but has never dived in California. I've been to Catalina but never dived there. We're both novices (he was certified 10+ years ago, I was certified only two years ago) and a bit rusty, so we'd like something easy in terms of logistics and access (e.g. boat dive, with a dive shop that will rent us almost everything and help us lug the tanks to the boat - but the boat doesn't have to be fancy), easy in terms of dive difficulty, and we prefer fauna to flora or wrecks. Diving near friendly sea lions would be great. Diving in cold water doesn't worry us (we're Canadians, after all) provided that a 7mm suit (or a 7mm layered with something else) will be enough (I've never used a drysuit before).

Checking out this forum, I've seen a few possibilities: Catalina (but that seems a little challenging in terms of logistics/access), Channel Islands (interesting but too long a trip) or San Diego. I'd appreciate any suggestions for dive shops, boats, locations and nearby accommodation (either specific hotels or neighbourhoods) that fit our itinerary. Thanks.

Catalina *is* one of the channel islands. A day trip to catalina or another channel island on a dive boat out of san pedro, ventura, or long beach will be your best best by far.

your comments about catalina having challenging logistics, or channel islands being too long a trip are not true at all!

I was visiting SoCal a week ago and took the Catalina Express out of Long Beach out to Avalon with some of the great SoCal folks here on the board. Took the 6:15am boat out, hopped a cab over to Casino Point, got in 3 dives, and back on the 3:45pm boat to Long Beach.

The dive park at Casino Point was a great introduction for someone with limited diving experience and zero kelp diving experience. Of course it helps to have a great guide/buddy (thanks again CaptainMarvel).

I'm sure you could probably convince a couple of the locals to join you for some dives just by posting a request here.

Thanks scottfiji and Mtndiver:

I guess I should say oops and sorry about my geographic ignorance. I should be more sensitive to such things, as I've had my share of quirky questions from people who revealed a limited understanding of Canadian geography.

We'll keep Catalina in mind.

Ditto what he said!

The dive park is a great dive, with concrete steps and a railing that take you right down into the water. You can dive at your own pace, seeing lots of sea life and going as deep as you want. Catalina Diver's Supply operates an air fill van right out of the same parking lot you kit up from, which is nice. Since they are a dive shop they can also rent you whatever gear you need. Catalina Express is fast (1:15 to 1:30) and smooth (dual-hulled), and boats run about every hour and a half. After the dive it might be fun to rent a golf cart and tour the island.

If you are a shore diver you might consider renting gear at Laguna Sea Sports, and doing some shore dives in Laguna Beach...it's cheaper. Shore diving in the winter is typically better than in the summer, but visibility still gets up to only 20-25' (versus 2x or 3x that in Catalina). Shaw's Cove is one of the most popular shore diving sites in California, and is only steps from Laguna Sea Sports. The next beach up features a dive site called Seal Rock, which is a Sea Lion haul-out (poorly named, because there are Sea Lions, but no Seals). It's very common to play with the Sea Lions at that site, which you said you were interested in.

I'll include three links below: one for Catalina Express, one for Laguna Sea Sports, and one that gives you information on all the California Dive boats.

Drop us a line and you'll probably find a few locals willing to act as a tour guide!

I agree you should strongly consider Catalina. You can take the 6:15 Express boat from Long Beach (one hour trip), rent everything at the island. Depending on your rustiness, you can dive off Casino Point, hire a DM to dive with you, or consider taking one of the dive boats out of Avalon, where you'll have a DM on board to help you set up your gear, and tanks right on the boat.

Mark me as another vote for Catalina Dive Park. I was just there last weekend and it was great. I've been there many times and don't get tired of the place - there's always more to see.

Dr. Bill on this board sells some DVDs which he shoots primarily in the dive park. I just watched one last night, and it gives a really good idea of what you can see there.

Frog, you might want to check with Catalina Divers' Supply about their winter hours at the trailer out at Casino Point. The trailer may or may not be open mid-week, although they do have carts to haul things out to the Point and it is not really that far. If you do a guided tour, maybe they'll even drive you out. Alternatively, you might want to check out a hotel/dive boat package through either CDS or Scuba Luv.

If you go diving in San Diego you can rent all your gear from DCI (gottadive.com) and get on one of their boats. Los Coronados has some nice vis and they do have a lot of sea lions at the site called Lobster Shack. They provide the tanks and weights. If you take a morning boat your back by 2pm usually....

Another great source of consolidated info is California Dive Boats

Around the holidays some boats are pulled out for maintenance, so you might want to check with the operators as to when they will haul out.

Fellow canuck here, I was transplanted from Toronto when I was young. So welcome. Hope you're able to get in the water.
