Anyone have any helpful tips on the cheapest airfare to Cozumel from southwest Florida(Ft. Myers area).

Cheapest airfare is usually the air only from a charter company like Funjet, but these usually open up only in the month before departure and are hit and miss.
You might save money by going to a major gateway like Miami, and looking for flights on less traveled days like Tuesday or Wednesday.
And airlines usually give their best price on their own website, you'll pay more thru Expedia or such.

Way more flights available from FLL or MIA. Spirit flies to Cancun - the airfare used to be cheaper than the taxes and fees.

I've taken the entire family over to Cancun a couple of times on Spirit. The first time was their introductory special - $29 each way.
If you can fly off peak - usually Tuesday -Thursday it's cheaper. Last minute helps too.
Right now they're advertising $49 on the following dates from FLL.
Cancun, Mexico $49* Each Way 4/19, 4/27, 4/28, 5/2, 5/3, 5/10, 5/16, 5/17, 5/18, 5/23, 5/30, 5/31, 6/1, 6/7, 6/8

Thank you also. If we wait until closer to the trip, do we stand a chance of not having an available flight? Is October season or off season in Cozumel?

Hurricane season in Mexico is the same as in Florida and is considered low season. Remember Wilma hit October 20.
Did you try looking at Spirit for your dates?
