Come join us for an underwater treasure hunt dive this Sunday in Diver's Cove in beautiful Lake Tahoe. The benefit is for DAN (Diver's Alert Network). The registration fee gets you a chance to win prizes, and a BBQ lunch. Not to mention the chance to dive in one of the most beautiful places in the USA. T-shirts are also available, and all proceeds go to DAN.

Contact Strictly Scuba at 775-884-DIVE for more info.

Hope to see some SB-ers there!

How much is the registration fee?

Dang! I thought I put that in. Doh! :06:

Day of dive registration is $25. T-Shirts are $15 if they are all not accounted for by pre-registrations. Entry to Sand Harbor is $8 - not included in the registration price.

Thanks for asking!

Schedule:
0915 Registration and Equipment Check
1030 Dive Briefing
1045 Dive Begins
1130 Divers must exit and BBQ Lunch begins
1230 Prize Distribution

After that, a lot of folks take another dive!

divetahoe,

You need to give us a bit more warning next time! I will actually be arriving at Lake Tahoe (King's Beach) on Sunday, but the SUV is already packed, and I don't have time to go back home and gather my gear.

Please let us know in advance the next time one of these gets scheduled.

um . . oh, and thanks for sharing (since I forgot to say that part first!)

Point well taken, though I could plead that I am not an organizer, only a participant. But since I registered myself two weeks ago, I still have no excuse. :439:

Mea culpa.

Ditto from me. Also going to be up there. Also already loaded up. Also w/out dive gear.

Maybe next year.

Hey ya'll, question:
Does anyone ever dive wet in Tahoe (summer of course) or is it pretty much a "dry suit only" lake?

and......

It does fall into the category of altitude diving, right?

Thanks

Absolutely! PADI considers anything above 1000' to be altitude diving, and until you have had special training for altitude diving you should not go diving at Tahoe. For example, the tables say you can stay down at 65' for 40 minutes when you are in Monterey, but once you go up to Tahoe that 40 minutes shrinks to only 22 minutes. Moreover, not all depth gauges will give you a correct depth reading when you are at altitude. Plus, there are other considerations besides just these two (e.g. ascent rate max of 30'/min).

The lake is nice in the summer, especially later (like now). During the treasure hunt, there were several in farmer johns minus the overcoat. The temp was 65 down to 35 feet and the vis (before 85 divers hit the water searching for golf balls!) was 60+ feet. I personally was in a 7 mil no hood and was very comfortable for a 45 minute dive, and I get cold easily (just ask divebuddysean!)
Come about mid-Oct (depending on weather) the transition begins to cold water. In Feb, the water temp is in the mid to upper 30s and it really doesn't warm up to the upper 50's until mid June, what with snowmelt.

And yes, it very much is altitude diving. If you are using a table for your calculations, you use the 7000 foot column/row.

What can be nice in the winter is mixing diving with snow skiing, as some great resorts ring the lake. Also, the lake itself doesn't freeze over, so you can open water dive (albeit cold at times) all year.

FWIW...

Hi KelpCoasters,

I'll second what others have said and add that I'm diving Tahoe in a wetsuit by preference right now. I dive a DUI CF200 drysuit during the colder months...

If you're considering coming to the lake and would like an introduction to altitude diving drop me a line. If our schedules are compatible I'd be happy to help you with the conversions needed for altitude diving and show you some nice sites too.

Best Regards,
Merlin
