Ray - What / where are the Belvidere Barges? We want details!!!!

Paula
What: Two sunken barges. Old. Wood. Rectangle-shaped. I heard they sank in the 1930's.

Where: In Anchor Bay, Lake Saint Clair, just North of the Clinton River. If you launch your boat at the Harley Ensign DNR ramp at the end of S.River Road, and go out the little cut across the river/channel from the launch ramps, the barges are on the left. There's houses all along there, and 3 trees. The barges are straight out from the trees. My chart shows it to be just outside of Belvidere Bay, but I've also heard that area called Conger Bay. If you go to Terraserver, and zoom in on that area, you can actually see the barges in the aerial photos.

The details you want: These wrecks are shallow, to the tune of about 3 feet. I wore my scuba gear, but it was unnecessary. A snorkel would have done just about as well. (That's why I put "diving" in quotes in the other thread -- and NO I am not logging the dive.) Yes, it's wimpy diving. But it's in my own back yard. And it's a good way to finish off a tank with a few hundred psi in it before having it filled. --But it's only diveable when the lake is as smooth as glass. Because they are so shallow, any kind of wave action will beat you up. Check the lake conditions on the Duffy's Landing webcam before going there.

I do not know the history of these barges. If anyone knows anything about them, please feel free to chime in.
