Hawaii is far superior in terms of diving quality, things to do on land, quality of life and everything else but it isn't the cheapest. If you are looking for "cheap," then Roatan is good for that but you get what you paid for here.

So, after talking with my Dive Instructor and my father, I am 95% sure we're back on our original plan for Cozumel. Thank you everyone for this thread and all the help!

f you're U.S. based, I'm guessing that plane trip to Hawaii will be long?
Only from KY... LOL OP is in Vegas and may still be able to fly non-stop - before USAirways merged with AA we could. It's a pretty long flight but the morning flight arrives at Noon. Pretty brual getting up the next morning though the Kihei boats all leave around 6AM.

specially for shore dives in Maui...
Escorted? Shaka Doug has to eat too. We just went in off the beach by ourselves.

Hawaii is expensive though, I know someone who has lived there for decades. They eat whatever is on sale in the market that week

Maui Dive Shop rents tanks for $7.

Yes, escorted. This would have been his first trip so I doubt he would venture out solo.
I just don't get excited about diving in HI, I do enjoy HI a lot but not for diving.
