I was just on the Nekton Roraqual (Oct 30 to Nov 6) doing the Southern Belize itinerary. I strongly recommend this liveaboard. There were some sites that I thought we might touch but because of weather were unable to visit. I question this to be the truth, but even without all the advertized sites it was a week to be remembered! I had also bought nitrox and the equipment was not operating (a membrane system is very sensitive).

I aim to do the Southern Bahamas trip April 15 to 30, two weeks back to back. Of all the Nekton's itineraries this seems to be the one most people pass out the most accolades.

My absolute, far and away favorite, as well.

The Nekton offers not only a stable vessel (evidenced by the lack of roll-rails on the tables and the electronic media gear resting unsecured) but it has an exemplary crew and personnel system.

I would venture however, that there is no better itin (comparing the Nekton Pilot in the various Bahamas routes vs. the Nekton Rorqual in the Belizian isles), but merely a different choice.

The Bahamian Nekton Pilot is an eye opening experience to the true wonder of the Bahamas- most of us having been jaded by diving in the faded jewels of Grand Bahama and Nassau, along with the standard attitudes of the locals. What a breath of fresh air to meet the native Bahamians of the outer islands, as well as to enjoy their largely unspoiled reefs.... terrestrial development not yet having reached these remote dots in the sea. There are wonders off of San Sal.

The Belize itin of the Nekton Rorqual not only offers the superior experience of this fleet's equipment, but a live aboard is the only way for a traveller to have a real dive-dive-dive vaction in Belize. Land based, even from the remote out island cays represents a limited exposure- not only in terms of variety, but also in the lengthy schlepp each day from any given resort to decent diving outside the barrier reefs.

Some may decry the Nekton's inability to approach the Blue Hole, but suffice to say that topic has been discussed here ad nauseum, so please check for it by searching. Many vacationers also inquire as to the possibility of doing Belize from the many day dive ops that operate off piers from Belize city. That, too is a subject for 'search' here, but pale by comparison to liveaboard.

Liveabords may cost more, some may cost more than others. There is a reason for this. I am not always drawn to liveaboards- several places where no US diver would consider land based, instead hopping on a liveaboard- I find the land based much more desirable. Belize is not one of those places.

There is no one option that is best for everyone, but I would suggest that you get your advice from fellow divers who have at least sampled all the options. Sounds like "peterbj7" has been around the block a few times. ;)

Peter, can you elaborate on your trip. I'm doing the same itinerary in March and I'm always looking for information.
Thanks,

One year ago July I sailed the Belize Aggressor, and it is a fine trip. Most of the time was spent oout at lighthouse reef. Food is on the plain side, but good. Service was excellent and the dive deck is the best I have ever experienced.

In February of this year I took the Nekton Roraqual to Mona Island off Puerto Rico. This boat is not as nice as the Aggressor, but the crew worked very hard to assure everyone a good experience. Unless they have done some work on it, the carpets were worn and so forth. The dive deck is a bit crowded. They do give you low pressure steel 95's with lots of gas. I was returning from hour long dives with half a tank. This boat may not be located in Belize year round, so check your dates. I am keen to do the southern Bahamas trip as well. There is a lot of great diving in the Bahamas and the entire area is very under rated compated to its true potential.

Don't know if this helps but just incase you didn't know, Aggressor is offering special prices at certain times of the year next year to different destinations around the world. Here's the link to the site http://www.aggressor.com/news_detail.php?news_id=23 maybe you can find something cheap.

Hope it helps!!!

I was on the Aggressor in Belize in May this year. I was to share a room with a friend of mine, but he was unable to make the trip. After seeing the size of the room, there was more than enough room for one, but for two would have been somewhat cramped. At the dock I went on the Peter Hughes boat and the rooms were much larger.

That being said, the crew was great, diving great and I would do it again. The nitrox was working on our trip.

Nitrox was broken on the Belize Agressor on my trip and on the Nekton as well. I must be a jinx. Nekton let us transfer the credit for the Nitrox (or any part of it) to crew tips, rather than making us wait for a refund.

This post was actually made by a guest on my account, only he omitted to add his name. He's just left today and I'll ask him to follow up his post once he's back home.

I asked the Aggressor - Nitrox is back up and running.
