Belize Aggressor III Captain's Report Feb 25 - Mar 3, 2012

Weather: Moderate w/ clear skies
Winds: Moderate 10-20KT
Water Temperature: 79 F degrees
Wetsuit: 3-5mm recommended
Crew: Capt. Jay, Engineer Fermin, Instructor William, Instructor Chris, Chef Yanis, Steward Francisco

Saturday we welcomed 15 guests from South Africa, Poland, Canada and the USA. After check in and scuba gear setup, I gave the safety briefing. A delicious dinner was served up by Chef Yanis and Steward Francisco.

Sunday we started the week of diving on Turneffe Islands Atoll at Sandy Slope. A juvenile drum, hawksbill turtle, giant green moray and several sargassum triggerfish were seen. For the evening we motored over to Lighthouse Reef Atoll.

Monday proved to be a great day for diving. Julie’s Jungle and Long Caye Wall had spotted eagle rays, lionfish, scorpion fish, several tarpon, Nassau groupers, and hundreds of pelagic tunicates filled the water column beneath the BAIII.

Tuesday morning we motored over to Half Moon Caye Wall. Awesome visibility (100+) and we got to see all the sponges spawning at once. If you have never seen this happen it really is a sight to see, the barrel sponges look like smoke stacks with clouds billowing out. After the second dive Keela got an unbaked “Aggressor Style” cake on the back deck for finishing her open water check out dives. In the evening we celebrated Bob’s 55th birthday!
Sponge.jpg
Wednesday we headed North to the Blue Hole for a deep dive with 20,000 year old stalactites. After the dive we motored over to Half Moon Caye and took a walk around the island until lunch time. In the afternoon we dropped in on Tarpon Caves. Southern Stingrays, blue parrot fish, hogfish, massive swim thrus, a few silver sides, and elegant eagle rays were just a few of the marine life seen during the dives. Ruth even got to play with a French angelfish for 20 minutes right under the boat.

Thursday was another beautiful day of diving. We started at Painted Wall and finished off the day at Cathedral. Great dives with spotted eagle rays “spotted” on every dive. A few hawksbill turtles, lionfish, tarpon, ginormous green moray eel, hundreds of Bermuda chubs and very well camouflaged decorator crabs. We had a thanksgiving feast for dinner then jumped in for the night dive.

Friday the Southeast wind picked up, but that didn’t stop us from having a dawn dive at 5:30AM on Long Caye Ridge. Then we splashed in for another dive on Dos Cocos. Awesome dives a beautiful eagle ray soaring by the divers and just off the wall in the blue was a 5-foot sailfish! Chris and I caught a few lionfish in preparation for the cocktail party - sushi!!! On the way back to port Andy caught a nice size Spanish mackerel - awesome!

Once arriving port a few guests went to the Belize Zoo and Cave Tubing while the others relaxed until our cocktail party and photo slide show. After the party it was a short walk to the Smokey Mermaid for dinner.

Another week came and went. We had a great week of diving and the weather was perfect. We hope to see you all again in Belize or on another Aggressor yacht very soon.

As always, keep smiling and keep diving!

Water Temperature: 80 degrees
Wetsuit: 3-5mm recommended
Crew: Capt. Jay, Engineer Fermin, Instructor Jody, Instructor Simon, Chef Yanis, Steward Randy

Saturday we welcomed 18 guests from the USA and Switzerland. Everyone checked in with Jody and Simon. Snacks and cocktails were served up by Randy and Fermin. I gave the safety briefing and then we sat down to a wonderfully prepared dinner by Yanis.

Sunday we began our week of diving at Sandy Slope on Turneffe Islands Atoll. Fantastic visibility for viewing the eagle rays, turtles, sargassum triggerfish, yellow headed jawfish, and big groupers. For the afternoon we motored to Lighthouse Reef Atoll and finished our day on Long Caye Ridge.

Monday was a great day on Hat Caye Wall and Cathedral. We saw a common octopus out feeding in the day, a congregation of tarpon waiting for the night dive, a nice scorpion fish camouflaged on a coral head, several large groupers parked in cleaning stations and a golden tail moray hiding in the reef. The night dive was fun as well with several white spotted nudibranchs, fringe back nudibranchs, reef squid, giant clinging crabs, and a school of 20 permit.
Ivonne & Mike.jpg
Tuesday we motored to the great Blue Hole for one deep dive around the picturesque stalactites. Then we headed over to the Island of Half Moon Caye for some bird watching and a barbecue - cheeseburgers in paradise as it were. The afternoon we hung out on Dos Cocos with 100+ foot of visibility. Hundreds of creole wrasse swam by the wall and a couple southern stingrays went hovering past the divers. A free-swimming moray eel was spotted transiting from one sand shoot to the next.
Andy & Ellen.jpg
Wednesday we dropped in on Half Moon Caye Wall. Big blue parrot fish, midnight parrotfish, hogfish, black groupers, southern stingrays and plenty of conchs were all seen right under the boat in the sand. A squadron of “3” eagle rays were cruising the wall and a big Caribbean reef shark decided to join in the formation. For the afternoon we splashed in on Long Caye Wall. We found a well-camouflaged scorpion fish and a beautiful intermediate French angelfish.
French Angels.jpg
Thursday we swam through the chimney on Tarpon Caves. A drop from 35 feet down to 90 feet. A big loggerhead turtle made a casual swim past the divers under the BAIII. During the dive at Painted Wall, 2 free swimming moray eels, a giant loggerhead turtle with 3 remoras pestering the old fella and beautiful elephant ear sponges at 60 feet made for great photos. Moving over to Aquarium we made an afternoon dive and spent 20 minutes with a friendly hawksbill turtle. For our 5th dive of the day we slipped in the water a little after 6PM for a twilight dive. Channel clinging crabs, squid, tarpon, sharp nose snake eel, slipper lobster and a burrfish all showed up.
Hawksbill.jpg
Friday started off early with a dawn dive, then we motored over to Turneffe Islands Atoll. Black Beauty was how we finished the week of fish filled dives! Back in port most of the guests went cave tubing, while the others lounged around in the hot tub waiting for the cocktail party. For dinner the guests made there way to The Riverside Tavern.

Tuesday we motored north to the Blue Hole. For many it was the first time to see stalactites and especially at 130 feet! To finish out the morning we toured the island of Half Moon Caye. Red-footed boobie birds and frigate birds by the thousands could be seen from the observation tower. A leisure stroll through the palm trees and a walk on the beach concluded the outing. Larger fish were found at the walls, like the midnight parrot, blue parrot, hogfish, goatfish, southern stingrays and large Nassau groupers. The night dive was off the hook with 3 octopus out feeding, Caribbean reef squid hovering over the soft corals, white spotted toadfish sneaking out for a late night snack, large channel clinging crabs and lobster were all seen at the edges of the powerful underwater boat lights.
M1082541.jpg
Friday we wrapped up our wonderful week of diving with two dives on Black Beauty. The divers put away their dive gear and relaxed on the sun deck while we made way for Belize City. Once arriving port, most went cave tubing, a few went to the Mayan Ruins and others went souvenir shopping for family and friends back home. When the tours concluded, we started our cocktail party and enjoyed some sushi rolls and ceviche. After the reminiscing everyone went out for some dinner at a local restaurant.

This week congratulations go out to Amy for completing her 100th dive, Larry with 400 and John with 152 dives just on Aggressor Trips!
