If there's scuba police on the island now, inquiring minds would very much like to know which op to avoid like plague.

On a more serious note, I've been less impressed with GoWest crews the last couple of visits than before. I'll ride on Tuki's boat anytime, but the rest of them... have their own priorities that may or may not coincide with mine. It's just as well you only need them to get to Watamula and maybe Blue Room.
I don’t think any dive guide I dove with was a “scuba police.” I think if you want to go off on your own, rent a tank and go. The guides were all excellent!!! These divers were NEWER divers and any dive operation will be held fiscally and practically mresponsible for any trouble these newer divers get into by going beyond their limits so the dive guides have every right to ensure their safety. Cause they are the ones who will have to live with themselves and/or will be sued if these folk get themselves hurt or killed.

Did you check their cert cards, or are you assuming?
Although I agree that a dive operation needs to manage their own risk levels.
Ultimately your observations may or may not have been accurate.

They told me how many dives they had. I asked.

If anyone NEEDS a Guide then they should reconsider the training they received.
I have often hired a guide. I don’t like groups and I don’t solo dive. One time my regular buddy (an Assistant Advanced Instructor) was limited my time underwater so I paid for a guide. During the pre-dive brief I check they are capable of doing the dive I want, if not I modify the plan.
