Before Emily & Wilma when was the last hurricane to hit Coz? I thought Coz rarely was hit with hurricanes. Am I imagining this??? I would love to see how many hurricanes they've had during the last 10 years. If anyone can enlighten me it would be appreciated. -Thanks

The last major hit they got was Gilbert in 1988. Curiously enough, Gilbert was the strongest (lowest internal pressure) storm ever measured in the Atlantic until Wilma, which surpassed it.

Here's some info, but it doesn't include Wilma:

They had a run-in with Hurricane Roxanne in 1995 according to the website, but I guess that wasn't as serious. It's really sad that such a beautiful island with so many good people is cursed with such a bad record as far as natural disasters.

Thanks for that link to hurricanecity. But come to think of it they hadn't really suffered a big hit before Gilbert in 88. Compared to Florida Coz has had it pretty good. Hopefully they won't suffer any more for 20 years or longer.

Wow, this quote knocked my socks off:

"Statistically when this area should be affected next
hit in 2005"

From my experience,in Cozumel since 1992, the following hurricanes have had a impact of some sort.

Surely there were strong hurricanes to hit Cozumel before Gilbert but then it was not a tourist destination until the 70s.

Gilbert of course in 1988, that was the historical "big one".

Roxanne in October 1995 Lots of damage, 135 mph winds the eye right downtown but went thru fast.

Mitch November 1998, glancing blow but hurt nonetheless

Ivan 2004 also glancing blow but still hurt.

Emily July 2005 eye hit Punta Sur but went through quickly and damage downtown was limited. Southern hotels were closed for a long time and many had not recovered by the time Wilma came along.

Wilma October 2005 Not the strongest hurricane to hit Cozumel, Gilbert was at higher velocity when it hit, but Wilma hung around way past her welcome. Maybe more destructive because there is much more to hurt now.
