I won't comment on weather or not you should get DAN insurance or not (personally I have the Master plan) but depending on where in Hawaii you'll be diving, not all islands have a chamber - Maui is one that does not, so any dive injuries here get airlifted out to Oahu.
And with Air Ambulance Hawaii not flying due to the "crashes" it gets tougher to get to Oahu.

Good grief no! It was already pure hell trying to get two leave forms approved for the same week leaving CONUS. That is the only reason we are going to Hawaii and not Aruba, Honduras, or Belize. Hawaii, being a US state, was a "more reasonable destination" according to DH's commander. Ugh, don't even get me started!!! If they knew we were going scuba diving that leave form may have never been signed. I can't even imagine the safety briefing that would have brought on.... :yelling:
I believe in the "need-to-know" philosphy when dealing with the Navy. :14:

I have never been a DAN member, and looking back, that might have been a very dumb mistake.

I am trying to convince my husband that we should become a member before heading to Hawaii next week. His reasoning is "we are only doing 4 dives, and none deeper than 45' ". My rationale is "diving accidents can happen at any depth,

Remember there are far more companies that do dive/dive trip/medical insurance than just DAN. Shop around, look around.

Having cover off SOMEONE is a good idea before diving but it doesnt have to be them.

Skip one dinner out this week/ month, and sign up. It's cheap, and if you need it, it's ready. Not only for the accident ins. but the ability to call and ask them for advise is worth the admission price alone. No brainer, if you dive, call DAN.

I would very much doubt that any work or otherwise insurance policy would cover a session or ten in a chamber!! The only reason we get free treatment in the UK is because of the NHS, when abroad you need insurance (dive insurance; no other!) Get the insurance that is what it is for!!

Also, you said that you have not dived for 8 years!! Your operator may insist on a refresher!!

If you have reservations about the cost, then at least start with the DAN membership. At the very least, the magazine is really informative. Also, DAN is a diver registry that gives great advice. It's a non-profit (DAN membership not to be confused with DAN Insurance) that the dive community supports in many ways.

I signed up for DAN even before I finished my OW certification. Two reasons: (1) they do a heck of a lot of good for the sport and (2) I want the benefit of one place to go in case of an emergency. Don't even need to think. Now, in the event of an emergency, my HEALTH insurance will probably pay a good portion of things, but I doubt everything. With DAN (I have to top plan, whatever that's called), I know the rest is pretty much covered.

Any you get a cool magazine every month or so! ;)

The resopnce that you get and the servuce that you recive whin thay now you have dan in worth the cost. I haven't needed it but. I did hear of a event. My friend was hit in Hawai last year. He was not diving deep eather but did a lot of rep. dives. To meany the last one was to much. Thay flue him to some dive hosptel and to day he is fine. I have it and my co. payes decompresion. Its cheep pease of mined.
