And as a father of a service member I'm glad to do it:D . Go for the DAN insurance. I've got their top level coverage. for 99 bucks you can't beat it (single premium rate). I'll be getting it for my son as soon as he gets to california for tech school. Before he hits the water I'll be sure he has DAN coverage. He's air force BTW. Airborne Linguist in chinese:14: is what he's training for. Just got his second stripe last week.:D Called me to tell me I had his addy wrong. It was now Airman First Class :14: as opposed to Airman.

Thanks everyone. DH and I are now card carrying DAN members. I also signed us up for the "Master" insurance plan. Even if we don't need the medical, it seems that just being a DAN member has a ton of benefits and is a great information resource. The Army might pay and it might not; I hope that we never have to find out the answer to that question.

I hope you never have to find out either. The security is pretty darn nice.

double80s:
Sign up, it's a no brainer. It's called accident insurance, not "What we planned" insurance. Go head and sign up for both of you (family plan).

Once again, proof that women are smater then men. :)

:D :D :D

Scuba_RN:
I left this part out.

Hubby and I are both Active Duty military. He says that since we both recieve health care for free (free? I know I work my tail off for it, but I digress) that all medical will be covered for us, including decompression chamber.

I really don't buy this. Besides, the Army isn't going to give me trip and medical advice if I call. I was all over the Tricare website and can't find anything related to Scuba.

You guys are right...I am going to go sign up now. Thanks. :)
It may cover it but do you really want the military to know that you had an accident?

I won't comment on weather or not you should get DAN insurance or not (personally I have the Master plan) but depending on where in Hawaii you'll be diving, not all islands have a chamber - Maui is one that does not, so any dive injuries here get airlifted out to Oahu.

Good grief no! It was already pure hell trying to get two leave forms approved for the same week leaving CONUS. That is the only reason we are going to Hawaii and not Aruba, Honduras, or Belize. Hawaii, being a US state, was a "more reasonable destination" according to DH's commander. Ugh, don't even get me started!!! If they knew we were going scuba diving that leave form may have never been signed. I can't even imagine the safety briefing that would have brought on.... :yelling:

Hi,

I would never consider going on a dive trip without having DAN insurance. I personally have the Master Plan. It pretty much paid for itself when I was diving in the Red Sea on a liveaboard and had a dive accident. I was hit in the head by a boat propeller, had to be rushed to the hospital in Sharm El Sheikh with a bleeding head wound. Ended up with 6 stitches in my head and 4 in my shoulder. They paid the portion of the hospital bill that my regular health insurance did not cover. And, since I had the Master Plan, they covered my equipment damage. My hoses were sliced and my Dive Alert was lost. Had to have my BC repaired and they covered all that without blinking an eye. However, I was secretly unhappy my BC could be repaired, as I wanted it to be replaced with a new one. Well, such is life!

I think you made a smart choice.

Ellen

First, thanks for what you do.

You made the right call on the DAN membership and insurance.
Hopefully, you'll never need it, but...

I had a DCS2 hit a few years ago, and, while almost all of the chamber/medical bills were covered by my health insurance, the DAN insurance covered the cost of:

a)some small 'uncovered' medical expenses.
b) 3 extra days (Dr. ordered and documented) at the hotel,
c) new flights home (for 2)
d) shipping all gear and luggage home
[Dr. ordered (and documented) no carrying/lifting]

Total:approx $ 3000

Enjoy the trip,
Mike

We got DAN insurance the week prior to starting our certification class and have had it ever since. Fortunately we haven't had to use it <knock wood>, but my husband has a colleague who went diving with his wife a week after they got certified. They were at 45 feet and her weight belt came off, causing an uncontrolled ascent. She was rushed to the hospital where she spent the next 8 hours decompressing. No, they hadn't "gotten around" to signing up for DAN yet. Both have good insurance, but with the deductables they still had to shell out over $500. Yes, they have DAN now.
