I am looking for a good hotel that is close to the beach and has a dive op so I can rent some tanks for some beach diving in Ft. Lauderdale area.......anyone have any good ideas?

Pick two of the three....LOL...
Actually, once MikeJacobs signs on and sees your post, I am sure he will be able to assist (he's our resident beach guru/weatherman)...in the meantime, there was a similar question asked a little while ago, and maybe it can help you....

You might try doing a thread search on this topic as it has been done to death. There are numerous posts through out the board that should answer your questions quite well. If you still need more info PM any of the folks that frequent the Florida Conch Divers threads, and live in south Florida, and we can certainly point you in the right direction.

lol don't rely on me to be your GURU but I do think I have the local shore diving figured out. Most of the rooms on El Mar Drive in Lauderdale by the Sea (just north of Fort Lauderdale on the water) have kitchenettes. $150 will get you a suite with an ocean view, quite a bit less as the season runs out and you move across the street from the beach.

The only street to stay on is El Mar Drive. The even numbers are on the beach and the odd numbers are across the street from the beach. You can dive from your door either way (no driving). There are some places on the east side of A1A as well, but you might have to walk around a (short) block... stay in the even numbers if on A1A because you don't want to walk a tank across A1A if you can help it.

There is a little dive shop (no nitrox) on A1A near the Commercial Blvd. Pier (Angler's Pier). They may deliver, but I don't know of any hotels with dive ops. Interestingly, we were just talking about it yesterday with one of the owners.

Mike - isnt there a dive shop right at the intersection of commercial and 1A or the next light up away from the beach? I can't think of any place in Lauderdale that has a dive op in the hotel, but I remember stuff being in close enough proximity that it wasn't to inconvenient.

Yes- I've never used the shop because I pass one with nitrox every day, but it's just a building or two south of Commercial on the east side of the street. Theoretically, you could walk out through the pier's parking lot fence (they've opened it while the pier is closed) and into the water right from the shop!
