Are you looking for a fun, cool and rewarding activity in the FL Keys?
Check out this article: 'Johnny Appleseed Of Coral' Invites Tourists To Volunteer While Enjoying The Florida Keys | WFSU

You too can be a Coral Restoration Diver! Learn more about corals, dive in the coral nursery, and help restore corals on the reefs! This activity is open to any diver! Just give CRF a call or check the CRF website for upcoming events. This is such a fun and rewarding dive experience, that I volunteer every chance I get. Get involved by:

If you have a group of divers, give them (or me) a call/email to set up a class with dives for your group.
The class sessions are about 2 hours and include coral biology, current state of corals and how they got this way, nursery methods, and the techniques you will be using today for nursery maintenance, transplantation to the reefs, and maintenance of corals on our local reefs. Class sessions are followed by a 2-tank dive to the nursery &/or reefs.
Watch for info here on ScubaBoard as well as event pics:D (Example: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/tr...s-9-25-12-key-largo-fl-fun-divers-needed.html)
If you can't come down to the Keys, but wish to help, do check out Adopt-a-Coral.

Coral Restoration not only has coral nurseries in the FL Keys, but also is starting programs in Bonaire and Columbia. :D

We hope that you will join in the fun of restoring coral to the reefs!

This looks like something we would REALLY enjoy participating in when we visit the Keys!

That sounds great! How much does it cost to volunteer and do I have to do any scullery work?

CRF asks for a $35 donation to help support educational and restoration activities. This is in addition to your boat charter fees which vary from dive op to dive op.

There are two levels of training.
One day class includes a couple hours classroom intro, coral biology, and techniques you will be using on your 2-tank dive trip.
The two day class goes into more detail and background as well as two days of 2-tank dives.
Once a diver completes Coral Restoration Specialists I or II they are invited to join in on the diving fun as often as they can.

Happy Diving!
ELENA

Seriously, sounds like a great program.

It was a fun, fun dive yesterday. Coral Shores High School and Island Christian School both came out. Vis was kind of bad, so I'm glad we had coral to plant to take our mind off the vis. The whole crew got on Scuba Santa's "Nice" list though. What a way to prove you care by volunteering to help the coral.
