I have dove three types of vests, two types of back inflates, and two types of Backplates and wings (BP/W). I ended up buying a Knighthawk ScubaPro Back Inflate because it was the right price at the right time. However, I have since upgraded to a Deep Outdoors backplate and wing. My LDS Sold me and my buddy the BP/W for $350 each. Comparing the 3 styles, each has a different aspect and way it reacts underwater. I noticed I was a bit more snug in the Vests and did not have good arm movement range. The backinflate worked well, improved my arm movement range and was easier to get on and off in and out of the water. The Jackets seemed to be less configurable. It fit and worked great, but there were sometimes problems when gear was moved around or the tank slipped a little. The Back Inflate worked better for me, it was comforable and had tons of gear tiedowns. The BP/W I have configured so I put it on and take it off and don't need to touch any strap configurations plus I feel that it gives me better control under water. It is also more adaptable then back inflates and jacket styles being, I can change the bladder from the #35 to a #50 or whatever is necessary depending on how many tanks I am going to jump over the side with. I would recommend trying out a few of them, and don't make any quick buying decisions. If the one you REALLY want costs $100 more then you have, save for it. Most likely you will end up buying eventually.
