Hello all,

as a relatively new diver, I had not heard of the backplate and wings combination until I started reading this board recently. I have been avidly trawling through the forums here to learn everything I can about the reasons for this choice but still have a couple of questions.

I see people mention that the BP/W conbination is much more streamlined, but I haven't seen where everyone stores their extra equipment. if you're diving a drysuilt then there are leg pockets but in a wetsuit are you hanging everything off the harness? If I carry a reel, SMB, small light, small slate I can easily put them in the two pockets of my Zeagle Ranger BC. Easy to get at and out of the way. Seems pretty streamlined to me.

The Ranger has rear wings, which seems similar to a BP/W combo. The harness on a BP/W is much simpler, being just a single piece of webbing, but the Ranger is well made, has attachment points in the places a BP harness has them, and doesn't look like it would be easy to break.

The bladders on the Ranger are replacable within the cordura outer, in case of leaks/wear. According to the manual I can put 2 tanks on the ranger too. If I'm not cave diving (doesn't hold much appeal) Can someone tell me why the BP/W combo is so much better than a well designed BC.

I looked hard at all the bc's available and chose the Ranger for most of the reasons I've seen people suggest the BP/W combo, even though I didn't know about tech style diving, it just seemed common sense to me at the time at to be streamlined and have your equipment well placed and easy to get at. I'd be grateful for a little more education.

Thanks,

J.

and don't want a BP/W to move more weight onto your back, then there probably isn't much advantage for you now. Besides weight distribution, the other advantage is tailorability. With a BP/W, most things can be attached or left behind as needed. Pockets can be added or removed or shifted to fit the needs of that dive. I can clip a reel or add a small pocket with a spool as needed. Lift bag/DSMB and snorkel (I like to carry one off-shore)attach between wing & plate. Slate & spare mask (or spool and gloves) fit in larger pocket which I normally do not carry. Small light clips to D-ring on shoulder. Also plenty of room to clip large lights and slung pony.

You probably would have been at least as happy with the modular BP/W. So if and when it gets time to upgrade, take a good look at what is available.
