Hi,

I'm trying to plan a last-minute trip for this coming week and was wondering how good or bad of an idea it would be to check out the Bay Islands. I saw that there was a tropical storm heading towards Honduras, but I know the path of these is really unpredictable. Does anyone know the weather down there this time of year? Will it be raining most of the day? Also, how much do these tropical storms affect visibility?

Thanks so much for your help!
D

The Bay Isands are great this time of year...except for the impending T.S. Felix that my be a hurricane and be over Honduras by Wednesday. It would probably be ok if you left next Sat....I don't think they have any middle of the week flights anyway....they are usually Sat to Sat or Sun to Sun...unless you are coming from the Honduran mainland...

conditions are usually good this time of year rainy season has not started but it is the topics and can rain every afternoon...where are you planning on staying??

There will be continued weather throughout the next 14 hour period, whereupon it will become quite dark for the following 10 hours. Unless it's not rainy, it won't be.

You really can't predict the weather in the Bay Islands.

Except for this. It's likely to get at least a lot of rain as this passes by.

Likely.... as in more or less likely than "Dean"?

Hank, I like pictures! See http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/144539.shtml?5day#contents As of Saturday Morning, the long term prediction shows this thing just a few feet North of the By Islands. Yikes! Of course, that is 4 days from right now. Wake me when (and if) it's time to take the hammock down!

Hey, if they run out of Salva Vida and Port Royal in the Bay Islands during "the big storm"... what help does Belize have to offer in terms of beer? A little relief effort shipment maybe?

Last minute trips mean just that. If you have the time and money to burn, come and go diving... or not. If you are truly "last minute", aren't you the afforded with the ultimate way to avoid any storm and always have great weather?

Get on a plane pointed somewhere else. Man, I wish I had those problems!

I think parrothead's reply was perfectly reasonable and appropriate. Who knows what the weather will be, but there is a storm currently heading that way. If I'm not mistaken, the bay islands have a slight advantage in that they are not directly in the "typical" path up hurricane alley, like jamaica and cuba for example. Plus, I have heard that the mountainous mainland of honduras tends to shelter the bay islands, as many hurricanes coming up the caribbean would have to go over the corner of the mainland before hitting the bay islands. The current projected path of Felix does seem pretty nasty for the bay islands, though, IF it strengthens and IF it holds the current course. Two big ifs.

This one has got me a little more worried than usual. This week in the Roatan I predict at least two lost days of diving. It takes a while to shutter up move boats etc and all dive shop staff are needed to do this. Tuesday and Wednesday are likely to be spent worrying about protecting our assets, not taking people diving! Sorry guys and gals! That is if it continues on its current predicted track.

I look at:

Intellicast

Also

Storm Carib

Yeah, this one looks like it might hit the bay islands. Maybe it will lose some strength over mainland Honduras, or bounce a little north. Good luck Will! Please pass on my regards to the folks at coconut tree.
