Guy, I owned a 1970 Purus and though it was reliable there were a number of niggling problems. Your experience may be different as Bauer made a number of improvements over the years. The oil would become cloudy after a couple hours. This appeared to be water intrusion. The compressor pumped water droplets into Scuba tanks. The early Purus did not have an inter-separator and did not have a back pressure valve. Moreover, the filter/condenser/coalescer was a rather simple cylinder with baffle and small charcoal canister inside. The charcoal would become wet after a short while which caused an odor. Since your compressor's valves were not rusted it may be that that model has fewer water control problems. Nevertheless, it might prove useful to blow down the compressor after filling the last tank. This involves running the unit under no load for 10 seconds which seems to expel any water or wax remaining in the final stage exhaust valve.

Does anyone know where I can get that special wrench for the 3rd stage, the one with the pins on both sides?

I think the special wrench part number is KB 4555-645.

If I can't get one, I can make one if I can get or develop an accurate specification for it. I would only need the exact diameter of the "pin circles," number of pins, and pin diameter.

I would appreciate any help I can get on this.

Thanks,

jv

Visser, maybe somebody could furnish you with their old valves. You could determine the dimensions from that. The pins are hardened steel, BTW. However, I would think that Bauer would sell you a wrench. Older Capitanos use the same wrench as the Purus. Not sure about the new blocks. But, then again, you never said what compressor.

I have a Purus. That's a good idea about getting old valves, if anyone has any they haven't thrown out.

I recently had the same issue with my K14. One of the local distributors was happy to help, and sold me a new removal wrench for about AUD50 (about USD40). Isn't worth machining a tool at that price. Give your local compressor destirbutor a call.
