Not entirely. Had a conversation about this with someone at ISE, formerly UTD. I'm sure you can guess who that is.

It shouldn't, but it still surprises me how small the dive world can be and the history that

Any more to that story, or are you going to leave it at that?

Oh come on

Arthur was complaining about Andrew, whooopdeeedooo. As fun as the rec.scuba and TDS era's were, this board has never been like that so you'll have to try the wayback machine to dig up the dirt

Lol okay I guess it wasn’t the obvious to whom I was referring.

But as you said in another thread about dive shops slagging each other, it is verbal and therefore if confronted, deniable.

One of the things I’m known for is keeping my mouth shut. The stories are there, if you know the right people.

Come on, Jack! I’m bored and want to read scuba agency tabloids! Haha, it’s really not a big deal—I was being facetious.

I have a friend who took the ISE “fundamentals” class with Achim.

He said Achim is an top notch excellent diver but has an ego and and is highly stressed. Also, his class was way more expensive, and had a “this class is only for hardcore divers” bravado mindset.

He didn’t have many other good things to say about the course, and he much preferred GUE Fundamentals.

Arthur is the only ISE instructor who was affiliated with UTD or vice versa. He's listed as inactive and he's in Singapore not Michigan anyway. More to the point this kind of squabbling is just silly. The OP can't take an ISE course for the forseeable future with Germany and the EU having their borders closed and the OP being in Michigan

I don't know why one would fly over an ocean to take a DIR gatekeeper course when one can be found so much closer.

Edit: I'd expect most (all?) of the instructors who teach these courses for the 3 DIR agencies to be competent and teach to a high standard (which is why I recommend these courses so often). Personality matches then become a deciding factor. Some people may eat up bravado, and others it is a turn off, for example. If the mannerisms of an instructor distract a student from learning, then that instructor is the wrong instructor for that person.

That's a great point. OP, we have a GUE Midwest FB and Google Group—PM ME and I will give you the details.
I remember my fundies class. It was exhausting. I was glad to be able to sleep in my own bed and have everything I needed just in case there was an equipment problem. Filled up the back of my car with more stuff than I needed, just in case. Though admittedly, my instructor would have been able to take care of that (such as on the 2nd day of diving, my dry suit zipper failed, which knocked me out of the 2nd dive - I got a loaner for the 3rd day).

It is a good idea to ensure as many backup items, including dry suit, are available. Sounds like your community will do just that. I find the various GUE communities with which I've interacted are extremely helpful and supportive.

Except 1) they aren't the same. And 2) there are plenty of terrible arseholey misogynistic, homophobic, jerkwad, instructors around that end up being a waste of time, money, and aggravation to the point of nearly quitting diving. Sorry not sorry but far too many people make excuses for "personality differences" which are far beyond that.
