I had this choice back in the early 90's. I had been diving on my original Basic card for years but was going to more exotic locations and was getting tired of explaining the card everywhere I went. As time went by I found myself doing more explaining and getting watched more closely on initial safety dives. It was clear to me that the sport had matured since '74.

I upgraded to OW and AOW - not a huge problem as I had enough experience - just an added expense.

For yuks I still occasionally show the basic card and for me it comes down to this:

The more modern and serious the dive operation was - the more likely they would restrict based on the Basic rating. Some did not care at all but I would rather not have the hassle. Log books and certs have become more important. Back in the 70's you could flash any card and that was enough. I don't think that is generally true now

Get the OW done and if you like night and deep diving with reputable operators get the AOW as well. I have not regretted this decision at all.
