What do you guys think is the best cold water reg, when cost is a factor. From what I understand, maintanance costs can also differ by quite a bit on regs with similar list prices. Any suggestions?

Zeagle ZX-DSV. Affordable, reliable, great in cold water, easy to maintain. Where are you located? How cold does the water get there?

The guys at Scuba Toys lead me to the Oceanic FXD10 / Delta 4 set up. Interestingly, shortly afterwards a post showed up about the Coast Guard selecting this reg for all of it's divers because of it's cold water performance.

I live in WI and while I won't be diving in 40F water I may get down into the 50's. I will, however, primarily use it for travel diving in warm water. The other things that sold me on it were the 2nd stage hose swivel and the DVT technology in the first stage. Well, not to mention the price ST gave me when I purchased it bundled with a computer. I've yet to use it but based on everything I've read about it before and since it's a winner.

The Diverite Hurricane is a great coldwater reg designed for cold water uses. It is a little more expensive at 600 for a first and second stage combo. Another option is the diverite RG3000 with ice kit installed at around 450.

An affordable option is the salvo series of regulators with a sealed first stage. They go for a little less than 380.

I'm located in Ontario, and dive in fresh water. I'm looking for a reg that can handle both summer and winter diving. I've heard good things about Zeagle. How does it compare with something like a Sherwood Blizzard, including both performance and maintenance?

It smacks the hell out of a Sherwood for performance. As far as maintenance I'm not too sure to be honest with you. It's been years since I used Sherwood. I know my Zeagles are effortless to maintain, and when I opened one up to service it, I couldn't tell that it had been used. It was spotless inside. Where in Ontario are you located? If you're local I don't have a problem with you doing a test dive on one of my Zeagles.

I live just outside of Windsor...a little far from you I think. Thanks for the offer, just the same. It sounds like you are very happy with your Zeagle though, and that I should consider it over a Blizzard. Thanks for your input.

I was happy with my Zeagle. Then I became happy with my 3 Zeagles, and now I'm happy with my 4 Zeagle regs. :)

It all depends on how cold the water gets where you will be diving. For the temperature range that Byte Me refers to there is certainly no ned for a specific 'cold water reg'. Water temps where I am get down to a bit below 50 (46 would be the lowest) and I have dived these waters for 30 years without ever having used a cold water reg. None of the divers I dive with have ever had any issue with these temperatures and just about any brand or model of reg you care to use.

Unless you are diving very cold water below 45 then just buy whatever standard reg suits your needs best.
