Jorge,
I was only planning on diving Banco Chinchorro for the one day and then maybe doing a day or two of diving on the more local reefs. I have been in contact with Jeanne the office manager at XTC and we are tying to nail down some dates, since she has some other interested divers. XTC is a good operation. I dove with them on a Banco Chinchorro trip in July '07 and it was a trip that I still reference as one of the best days of diving ever.

Hey Holyhumor!,

No prob, 1 day is good also for Chinchorro...., will get in contact with XTC and see hows the diving with them!... Keep in touch!, and tell us the dates you choose so we can see if we have some divers to go....

Hey Yucatan Divers,

I am still trying to arrange a trip to Banco Chinchorro sometime between the 9th-19th of July. I have been in contact with XTC divers and they are ready to go on a good weather day and just need 3 more divers to round out the trip. I am leaving Monday the 6th and will be based in Tulum. I can make the trip on short notice and will be in Xcalak for 2-3 days to dive even if the Chinchorro trip is not possible, just hoping to nail down a window for the dates to make the trip South. This can be an incredible opportunity to dive a place that has a bit of a legend about it since a lot of divers have heard of the place, but few have actually been there. As a diver who has had the fortune to be on a trip in 2007, I can tell you it is worth the extra effort to make the trip. I have have had incredible dives in both Cozumel and Belize and this trumps both of them for untouched beauty and thrills, O still refer to it as my best dive ever. Contact me through the board and we can be in phone contact to arrange final details.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve, post a link to this thread on the Cozumel board. You might find a few people there who would be interested. Divers staying in Cozumel routinely make the trip to the mainland for a day or two of cenote diving, and in the summer many will take a couple days and go up to Holbox to do a snorkel trip with the whalesharks.

Hope you can make the trip happen and conditions work in your favor for getting out to Chinchorro. I've wanted to go there for years, but we can never get away in the summer months and that's the best chance you have of getting out there.

I found this thead while researching Akumal dives for November.

How was the diving and what were the costs?

The diving at Banco Chinchorro is incredible. Probably the most well protected dive site and a national treasure in Mexico. The tough part is arranging a trip. Javier at XTC Diving has the only permit to take tourists in to the area and the 35 mile trip out from the mainland requires enough divers to make it financially viable for XTC. I am in contact with the folks there and I know that there was a trip the weekend before last. Just to give you an idea, 200 tourists visited in '07 the first year that I went. Something like 585 in '08 and the numbers for '09 are not tabulated yet. If there is any way that you can arrange a trip I would definitely do it. The costs is around $200 per diver and well worth it, they need 4or 5 divers minimum. November could be a bit late in the season for the trip if there are any winter storms building. Even in calm summer weather it is a journey; up one 5-6 foot wave and down the next for 1 1/2 hours. The hurricane did do some damage when it sat on the banks in '08 but the reefs are recovering nicely. I encourage anyone that has the ability to do this adventure to dive right in.
